My wife and I went out rockhounding last weekend for her first time and we had a blast. Didn't take alot of pictures but the weather was perfect (70's) and I hardly broke a sweat. I did find a hillside where the Yellowcats were weathering out of and I tried to find the source but couldn't. I do have the area narrowed down so hopefully I can get to the bottom of these little gems. These are the two best ones I found. I will face them and polish them up. They should turn out pretty good. I did find lots of smaller casts as well. Steve

Those are really cool castings Steve! Beautiful reds - I could never figure out why they don't call that place Red Casts, rather than Yellow Cat. Should make beautiful shelf specimens when face-polished.

Those are really cool castings Steve! Beautiful reds - I could never figure out why they don't call that place Red Casts, rather than Yellow Cat. Should make beautiful shelf specimens when face-polished. My guess is that because of the many rocks that have yellow in them (no, I'm not trying to be a wiseass). While the vast majority in the area are predominantly red with some white, the ones that have yellow in them are really striking. We "found" a new place in the Yellowcat area by mistake and most of what we found had significant amounts of yellow in them. I particularly like the ones that have red, yellow, white AND blue. My only regret is that this year we didn't find any large chunks that didn't have fractures in them. I've put off slabbing them but I will at some point. In the meantime, we have plenty for cabbing and tumbling.

I'm drooling. Trying to get out by Hanksville next week. Want to look for more coprolites. A Spring trip to Yellow Cat sounds like a good idea. jeff

Jeff...what part of Utah are you from?? This wekend would be crazy down there with the Floy Wash trip going on. I'm sure the hills will be picked clean. An early spring trip would be ideal! steve

It's impossible to pick that area clean! It's the gift (place) that keeps on giving.
