Hello, I read somewhere, might of been on here about a certain type slab that when you went to cab it would absorb a lot of water and be difficult to get a topnotch shine. Here is my thought, could you cut a round piece to use as a drink coaster or the disc you put in your vehicle drink holder. Would you need to epoxy or polyurethan the bottom and sides so the moisture doesnt go out the bottom? Would a regular piece of jasper or agate work? Seems like the water would run off n ruin the tabletop? Does anyone know what the material is and what do yall think about this as a project?

I believe you are thinking of sandstone: www.pineridgeonline.com/store/upright-scroll-dark-brown-coaster-holder.htmlWhile it won't polish, it does absorb water, so it will not drip off the edge. I hate it when you pick up a drink, and the coaster sticks to it! Jean I have no affiliation to the seller of the link above, just wanted to show the coaster! And at that price probably cheaper to buy than to make...

The photo at the top is a slice of natural, genuine, unpainted sandstone. I wasn't talking about the ones lower down on the page. Yes, those have been decorated.
Sandstones come in a variety of different colors and patterns, and can be quite beautiful in their natural state. They will absorb the small amount of condensation from a drink, you would not want to seal the bottom or sides. Sandstone will sop up the liquid, the trade off is it is very porous, and will not polish. Or, you can use a stone that is not so porous, and hard enough to take a polish - but it will not be absorbent. Which are you looking for? Form or function? Jean

Function and some looks, doesna have to be shiny but a pattern would be nice. Shine the bottom some so it doesnt scratch the table?

Would either of these natural sandstones fit the bill as having a pattern? coasters.pebblez.com/sandstone-coasters.htmlCheck the 6th and 7th ones down. Usually, they come with a thin round of cork glued to the bottom to protect your furniture.
