Howdy folks,
I'm not very good at using a computer and something just happened that I don't understand. I use Mozilla Firefox and when I hit Mozilla icon on my desktop it usually brings up the Mozilla homepage. Just turned on my computer and hit the icon and instead of Mozilla, some kid of Yahoo Y! page comes up. I can use my bookmarks from there but cannot access my mail inbox, sent items etc. It asks me if I want this as my homepage and I don't but cannot figure out how to get back to old Mozilla homepage that has my mail etc. Can anyone help me with this?. Thanks.....Mel

Look at your history to find the right page and copy the URL, then go to the top left corner of your browser window where it says "Firefox". Click on that and click Options. Click on General and look for the section that says Startup and paste the URL into the Home Page box, then save it.
PM me if you have more questions.

Mel, sounds like your home page was re-set by whatever. . . Go to the page you want as your home page and then at top left of window click TOOLS/OPTIONS/ Look for the 'General" tab, there is a button there to select the current page as your home page. That should reset it.

Something has hijacked your homepage. Likely you "default search" was hijacked to yahoo's ask.com, or something installed the ask.com or yahoo toolbar.
But, Mozilla/Firefox itself does not have email, so I get a bit lost in what you are saying about email. I think you had Firefox start screen (not actually a home page because the browser has not actually gone anywhere yet) that has some frequent links (like email).
You can reset your homepage to whatever URL you want, but we need to figure out what URL (with email) that you had. Maybe get it out of you history or something, if you do not know it.
Can you describe the start screen (or homepage) you used to have a bit more? Did you install anything recently, or click to download/update anything?

Thanks guys, I asked my wife and she said that my Mozilla icon actually brings us the yahoo homepage and that's where my mail is. So now I just have to get the proper url from her computer and type in in my homepage box and say it. I'll let you know if that solves the problem....Mel

Thanks guys. tried what you said and it did not work so I ran a cleaner program and the problem must have been with some kind of cookie or some such as running the cleaner seems to have fixed the issue. Again, thanks for your help....Mel

I just saw this... sounds like something hijacked your system. If you have any other problems let us know, but to be on the safe side, you should probably run a couple of virus checkers to make sure you caught them all. I'd run your full scan on your current virus program, then go online for a 2nd opinion scan at a good virus company like Eset or Kaspersky. Here's a link to Kaspersky: usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/free-anti-virus-scanDo Malwarebytes too: www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/Between the 3 (counting whatever home antivirus you have), you should catch any critter that was trying to snuggle into your system. The reason you do all 3 is the best rated antivirus only gets 97% of potential viruses, so cross checking gives you a better chance of getting them all out.

Yeah, I ran the scan too. I pay my provider extra for a special anti-virus, anti spam screen. Plus I have a regular pay for use virus program too. Knock on wood, but I've not had a virus get through the firewalls since I moved to Texas.. I don't know much about computers but it looks like this was some kind of sales pitch cookie attached directly to Yahoo as it had a Yahoo logo and Y! for it's title name asking me if I wanted to sign up for Y! and make it my homepage...Mel

Have you updated anything lately? With updates or software installations you have to watch for the little check boxes for other crap you don't want. The pre-checked select boxes for various toolbars especially drive me nuts.

Lee; I think Adobe is the only thing I've updated lately and that's never given me any problems before. Guess it shall remain a mystery ....Mel

Adobe has been trying to slip Google Chrome into its downloads lately, and the Googley is a notorious turf grabber.
Got your email back, Mel? Better shoot one off to the Registrar of Voters cause that Yahoo Trojan thingie typically defaults yerass to progressive liberal registered Democrat. Either that or you got a lifetime supply comin’.

I got into a nasty call center problem with... (the provider name will go unnamed) its never happened before ;D my sister was having problems with sending/receiving e-mail I could tell that the problem was provider related my assumption was that they changed the outgoing/incoming address Well the person at the call center wouldn't give me the new address !! she was trying to talk my sister into buying a ten dollar a month technical support package to fix the problem I came alive over the phone I was pretty acute-- but no foul language-- well there might have been a damn in there-- --they supposedly record these phone call for future reference needless to say our communication broke down I went out to the web site-- got the new addresses--- and fixed the problem the next day the provider called my sis and apologized I guess they listened to the recorded message I'll be damnE mostly

Yep, the cookie or trojan horse or whatever definitely seems to be coming from Yahoo. Seems that I have to run the cleaner before I open my home page as otherwise the page will not load properly. Kind of a pain but I usually run the cleaner before I turn off the computer every night anyway and it only takes a minute. This rig is ancient by computer standards and I probably need to buy me a new one *L*....Mel

if it's still running, you didn't get it all, and it's replicating in your registry. Getting totally rid of viruses are a NIGHTMARE. Did you ID the virus? Most scanners will tell you which virus and where it's located in your files. Sometimes you have to manually check the location to make sure it's completely deleted and gone. Virus' can infect a 1 day old computer, so figuring out how to get RID of it is easier whether you get a new computer or not. When I had a really bad one a couple of years ago, not a single virus/malware program found it except this one: www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/What it WILL NOT do is clean it out for you, it will only ID the odd file as a problem (find it, delete it).

Helen --if you buy this program instead of just using the free copy, will it get rid of them( clean them out) ? ( the hitmanpro)

snowdog, probably. I don't buy a lot of the online virus checkers, because I already have one, and they are 2nd opinions. Not something I run all the time.
I did the free scan because it doesn't take long to find and delete. Just follow the full address in Windows explorer (with Win 7, you can just type the last file name into the Search).
Also, when you run the scan, you see a ton of cookies. Cookies are mostly harmless, and store things like last time you were at a site or 'remember your password', or if it's a shopping site, keeps your cart. So you don't necessarily want to delete all the cookies, which ANY scan will always find loads of.
What you are looking for are 'suspicious', and even of those, it may not necessarily be dangerous. Virus or Malware classifications are what you are mostly looking for. Those you must find and manually delete. Reboot the system, then look in the same spot to see if they've copied themselves there again. If so, you must root it out of your registry itself... which can be very time consuming.
