We are (Jeri and I) going to bug out for a day so we can go to Stillwell to find something lost and if enough time to dig up the Pet wood tree I found (really want those roots). Of course anyone that wants to, is welcome to join us! I think Stillwell is a bargain if you're willing to drive the 90(?) miles to get there. NO FEE for rockhounding and 50 cents a pound for what you keep! I think the material is similar to what you find on the East Side of WWR. Here's what I got in 2011,: Pics taken wet. The whole place reminds me of a dry river bed. I guess that's typical of the desert... Later, jeri

While I'm into it, more pics... If you've been to the East Side of WWR, you should remember that first treacherous descent to the good places... It's been graded! Chuck had no problem getting in or out with his mini-van. This is how low Ash Creek was last March. If not for the rocks, you could have crossed it without 4WD. Another pic of how dry WWR was last year. The grass BROKE if you stepped on it! The last cowboy... Gone but not forgotten! I was very happy to see the longhorns were still at WWR! If Chuck doesn't mind, I'll post the pics with him and his daughter. Later, jeri

Got my reservations. Not sure if i will go to Stillwell. Never been too thrilled about the rocks there. I really like collecting at WWR, so while part of the group goes to Stillwell, I will head out to WWR then just meet up later back at camp. This is subject to change however. If it means spending time with friends then it's a no-brainer. I will go to S.R.

I'm gonna stay with Gil at WWR. I too wasn't impressed by the rocks available the last time I was at Stillwell. Now if Marfa is still a go, I'm in for that.

Stillwell Is pretty complexed, It had a good rep in the rock world then not so much. Good agate can be found if you know what to look for. If I was the owner? I would bring in a road grater and turn everything up. That stuff that has been sitting there for hundreds of years that has never seen the sun cept for the day it was born. We are only going back to try to find something that fell out and wasn't missed until later. And if we find it soon I "will dig up that bloody tree" We never expected anyone else to go with us, just saying that we will poof for a day.

Jeri, sure go ahead and post the pics.
The first time I was at Stillwell I found a phenomenal 20 lb. palm bog root. Last year I found several pieces of agate and wood that I was very happy with. Not plume agate like you'd find at WWR, but a nice combination of moss and fortification.
I hope you find the rest of that tree! That piece was fantastic!

OK! People pics! ;D She was soooooooo happy that Nan said she could take home a cactus! I forget what she named it though. Chuck at camp. Note the buckets behind him. Mark's Marfa haul... It went home in the cooler! LOL Primo picks. The proud, slightly sunburned (no peace sign), rockhound. Guess who... Had to get Buddy in the pic too! Well, that's all I got. Any of you that have been to Stillwell... Nan passed away 7-26-12. Later, jeri

The Marfa trip is still in question everyone, I can't stress that enough. The owner was in poor health last year and the daughter/heir stated imfacticly (sp) that the ranch would not be open to rockhounding when she gets it. I haven't heard otherwise so fingers crossed, Got some great rock from there (I'll try to post something tomorrow) without too much strain. I've already warned Jeri that Ed and I tend to stay up late talking (I was learning then, now time to catch up) Can't wait!!

Gil, My dear son. Dad and I are trying to get there. We will be at KC if that's where everyone will be. We can't stay at wwr for the price of camping 40$ a night. 1,300 miles at the diesel price is 4.20$ a gal. You know we also need Guinness so some things have to be cut back on. Like camping fees. he,he. I think Dan is going! Can't wait to see all you guys again. Love, Silver-lass

The cactus was named Spikelina. No relation to Spike! That's a bummer about the missing bag of rocks! I don't have them. Sorry to hear about Nan. She didn't look like she was in the best of health when we were there. Somebody with a truck might want to see if Stillwell Ranch will part with the 2 saws that are sitting unused out back. If I remember, one is an HP in the 24" range (maybe 18"), and the other is an LS12. My memory is a little fuzzy, though. Chuck

Chuck Shhh about the saws LOL. Yeah that bag is here somewhere?
Mikes is pretty much out after his surgery the other day, We talked.
It's going to be a great time and great rocks for all. Be thinking about Marfa and if you want to go, I will ask for a show a hands soon (if we can still go) this link shows a TINY bit of what I found there and worked (the first 9ish? ) but does show the high grade of rock. Btw the buckets behind Chuck? that was after it was after the finds were high graded!
