Some tumbled, a couple free forms, and a nice knot from E. Oregon. We like knots and pieces that have healed cracks in them. This rock pile has had a rough developement, a great majority of pieces have broken and healed. Attachments:

Clyde, neither place, new find. Been sworn to locational secrecy by "she who must be obeyed", at least temporarily. Can't seem to get good pics. not have too much reflection w/o washing the polish out, they did come out pretty nice. Thanks all for the looks. Larry

Quartz, I find something almost identical here (central Washington), except that you have a better selection. I have found a few with the lovely brown patterns, but most are almost all black, except for a few lines of chalcedony (or quartz) which I believe are healed fractures.
Do you have any idea what the composition of the black is? It almost looks like petrified charcoal.

susand: The composition of the black is likely chalcedony [no pic. to see], with manganese as an impurity, giving it the color. If you are talking of Saddle Mtns., that is what it is, at least the best I can learn. Or, it may indeed be petrified charcoal, some of the beach mtl. found in the Bandon, OR area is said to be charred wood, some polishes well, most about like a brick.

Nope. In hindsight, I shouldn't have said we are keeping this place secret. The reason we aren't talking at present is we had a really short amount of time at the site, but the exploration we did showed the deposit to be very limited. If a return trip shows it to be worthwhile in size, I'll be happy to give directions. I don't want to be sending people to a hard to get to place, only to find nearly nothing; we've chased that wild goose. Larry

Quartz, it's not from Saddle Mtn. It's actually from a place about half way between Quincy and Wenatchee. I don't know that it's originally from that *exact* spot. There are several acres that appear to be used solely for the dumping of excavated rock which may have been hauled in from somewhere else. When tumbled, most of the black gets a killer shine, but the chalcedony lines in it become raised (i.e., don't wear away as fast as the black), but only minimally. Some of it, though is rather soft and doesn't take much of a shine. I'd be happy to send you a few pieces for comparison.

Really nice wood. I like it when the wood actually shows grain and looks like wood....Mel
