Howdy,
I will be taking the family on a road trip to New Mexico this summer, not the best time to go running around in the desert. If anyone knows of some good and easy places to go I would love to hear from you.

The Gem trails book, or even the rockhounding New Mexico book are full of many places to go. You don't say what part of NM you're going to visit??? I usually tell folks to go to the Rio Puerco sites in the book, there's millions of tons of agates, Petrified woods, jaspers, etc, but all small. I manage to find some baseball zise for slabbing, but 90% of what is there is tumbling material from tiny to egg size. Tell us where you're going, maybe we can help better.. BTW, I go "running around" in the desert around here all year long. You just need to be weather wise, carry lots of drinking water, and have a dependable vehicle. Temps can range from 120 in August to -10 in Winter... but it's usually something layered clothes can handle. Wear really GOOD shoes and watch for snakes in the summer.

I will be spending time in Santa Fe (north) and visiting White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns. That is all we have planned so far. We are driving in from CA so we may come in from the south and head back taking the northern route. Pretty much anything is fair game at this point.

I live in Southern New Mexico, Alamogordo. We have some nice areas down this way if you want to explore the south some. Sacramento Mountain Range behind our house...National Forrest, Ski Apache in Ruidoso and Mountain village of the Cloudcroft. Both are tourist villages in the mountains. There is the Trinity site where they set off the first Atomic bomb. White Sands National Park (Gypsum White Sand Dunes nestled between two mountain ranges). 45 minutes to the North they have the Valley of Fire, whereby a volcano left a huge lava rock bed for miles and miles. And just 20 minutes East of there, is the old western town of Lincoln where Billy the Kid roamed and was jailed there and broke out. The jail house and surrounding original houses and stores (Mercantile Store) is intact and has been maintained as a State Historical site. So..lots of places for the family to visit, shop and scenery to take in. Not to mention the state is full of all kinds of rocks. Tons of turquoise to be found and bought here as well as others. I"m just now learning what kind of stones we have in this state. If you come this way, You're welcome to come to the house and visit! Not sure I can go rock hunting due to my knife business but would be nice to visit with you and talk rocks! If you decide to come this way, contact me and I can give you contact info. I love New Mexico, we have some beautiful areas. PEACE!

Pinto that is right neighborly of you, I may just take you up on that. There is no shortage of tourist things to do in old NM. Growing up in Santa Fe I am "turquoised out". Peruano and I traded flat rate boxes of rocks. He sent me some really neat agates he collected. Once I am done with my crosses I can't wait to dive in and make something out of the stones he sent me. There is the Harding pegmatite and the town of Bingham with their mines. I think I can safely drag the family to those

Ahh no problem barclay...I understand the turquoised out thing...Yeah I see so much of it here it's no big deal anymore. At any rate, enjoy you visit back to the state and I hope you find some good stuff.

Let me know when you are in town and I will call you with several collecting areas. North of Santa Fe is Abiquiu Lake, the area is full of large agates. As Phil mentioned the Rio Puerco is flooded with agates, jaspers and petrified wood from Rio Rancho to Belen. Jason
