Hi Chuck,
Very colorful, and an excellant variety of stones. Did you collect the "rough" yourself, or do you have a good source for the tumbling rough? How many weeks in the rotary to get them down to flawless rocks ready for the vibe? Many times that has been my issue with the rough I have purchased. They are so "rough" that it takes months in the rotary and then I finally realize it has been a waste of time, effort and grit...and they still have flaws.

grizman - My rough is from a wide variety of sources. I slab a lot of rock so some of my tumbles come from the end cuts and saw scraps from cabbing. When I run low on stuff to tumble I do bust up some of my cutting rough to tumble.
When we started we ordered all of our rough from the rock shed and that's a great way to go for guaranteed success but after we got in deeper and started tumbling quanity that was not a good economical choice anymore.
right now if I were in the market for tumbling rough I would order one of the boxes that beefjello just posted today in the buy and sell section. I bet that stuff is around $2 a pound and looks great. You would just need to be able to bust it up to get it the right size.
right now I keep 30 pounds of rock in 46/70 grit in rotary tumblers and out of all that each week I try to pull 4 pounds to go into 120/220. I f I had to guess I would say most of my stuff sees 4-8 weeks of the 46/70 but each rock is different which is why I clean them all out every week to inspect them. My lake superior agates are my longest running rocks at 12-14 weeks in the rough stage.
thanks for looking and keep asking questions! Chuck

Beauties Chuck! I like the Morgan Hill, just got a slab of that stuff yesterday, anxious to get it cabbed. Looking at your tumble, it appears to work up great!!!

vwfence - do you think my "unknown" picture of the green spotted rocks might be lizard stone? Those pieces are from a chunk I got off ebay but there was no I.D. on it.

I wish I could remember exactly what that was. Thats the problem with these mixed batches. Its hard to keep track of what everything is. My son was guessing brecciated jasper because we have had some of that but I am not sure.
