This stuff is one of my favorite materials but..... gosh darn it...... the patience involved in cabbing a mohs 4 stone is quite extreme. Guess that's the reason this is the first one I've done since the last, three years ago. Love the stone though!!! Cab: And better shot of the cab:

It takes a master to put that kind of shine on a four hard stone. I thought it was impossible. Jim

wow that's a great cab. I admire your skills. I had a horrible experience trying to tumble some real nice fluorite rough and ruined it all so it will be a long time before I buy anymore.

I can only imagine the patience and skill involved. When you have a stone of that quality, you never want to give up! It's just plain wonderful!

The last one that I did got a bit hot from making it shiny, ended up looking like a shattered windshield Thanks everyone. Randy, to prevent crazing on Fluorite you have to use a full water drip and diamond paste on felt. You also polish at a medium speed versus the high speed used for most stones. This piece was from the top left corner of the slab. It has internal cleavage on it and the shadows from it is what is showing up as black areas in the finished stone. I can get about 6 good cabs from the slab though that have no internal cleavage. I was too nervous to start with one of those though. Next one will be truly gemmy! I also learned something new doing this piece. If you ever want to find out if a portion of your disk is contaminated..... do a piece of fluorite, LOL! I found out the center of my 1200 disk is bad. It scratched the stone and once I got the scratches back out on the 600 I could only use the interior and outer edges of my 1200 disk to get it right. I'm bummed because my 1200 disk is only 2 months old and now I have to order a new one
