Ok, call me a girl or call me a fool. I cut a fabulous cab of OJ, the best I will ever do, I think. I absolutely love it. I put it up for sale because I wanted to hoard it, which would be wrong - it needed to go into a piece of jewelry. I knew it would be hard to part with. It was. A dear client asked me last night to reserve it while she thought over the price and I immediately began to regret it. She couldn't wait and bought it in the middle of the night, so I woke up to find my precious had been sold. On the bright side, she has asked me to wrap it, too. Am I the only one who finds it hard to part with some of my stones? I just know that I will always regret selling this one.

Oh, I'm the same way! I still regret selling a wrap I was fond of, and one or two cabs as well. Hoarding is strong in my family line, and the ones I did actually save just get put in my cabinet, ignored for the most part. It was the right thing to do! And you have a gorgeous picture to remember it by, and you made a dear client happy.

Hoarding also "runs" in my family, lol! I am more of a slab or rough hoarder, promising myself that someday, I will cab something up. But once the cab is made, or even wrapped, it is not hard to part with it. The joy is in the making, not keeping.
I feel your pain! But I'm sure you got a good price for it (or else you wouldn't have even offered it for sale), and as far as it being "the best I will ever do" - now you have something to strive for - to make one that's even better! Jean

I'm an extreme hoarder. I keep all of my cabs, slabs and rough, though as I get older I'm starting to consider how I'm going to reduce my hoard so my children and grandchildren won't be burdened by figuring out how to dispose of grandpa's sacred rocks and stuff. Bob

I have a complex relation to the rock. It is easier (not easy) for me to part with most rough than slabs, all but the most exciting. Slabs are my friends. It is easier for me to part with slabs, again all but the most exciting, than something I have designed and trimmed. Trimmed pieces are my raw creations. I do give away some trimmed pieces to folks who will finish them a lot quicker than me, but very few. However, once I polish (something, especially if I set it too), it becomes so easy for me to part with. I give away almost everything I make. I still have pictures. Why the change? Except for the occasional bolo, I do not wear stones or jewelry. So, I think it gets easy because I am done with it. My time with the piece is finished. The rock has grown up.

I usually let mine go. If I didn't, I would not be able to afford more rocks and equipment upgrades.... I think I hoard pictures more, my photobucket album and sub albums contain over 1000 rock pictures, LOL!!!!

I usually just take pics and keep, those along with the memory.

My neighbor's kids were over and wanted some of my tumbled rocks, which I had been trying to figure out how to get rid of. I was a bit surprised that my first impulse was to protect my rocks from sure abuse at the hands of evil midget polish killers

I love the idea of 'The rock has grown up' Daniel! Thinking though the states, I tend to hang on to rough, because you never know what might be hiding inside. Slabs, a bit easier, if I don't 'see' a cab shouting out to be freed. Cabs, easier still, if they're not calling out to me how they want to be wrapped. I've finally gotten to the point where the cabs I've held onto for years still don't 'talk', I'm selling! I have kept more wraps than I should, because unlike Daniel, I do enjoy wearing them.

For me, jewelry is really easy to let go of, though I do have a stash. Slabs are hard to part with, but cabs are the hardest. I agree, too, that if it isn't speaking to me- it is easiest to let it go. I used to hold onto the quiet ones, but I know now that if they don't speak right off the bat, they never will.

That IS so funny Vibratumble!!!!! Ironically, something very similar happened to me yesterday. We have been renting a house for the last few years after the recession back in 2009 cost us our home ownership due to our business income decline at the time. Well, we hardly ever see our landlord but yesterday he showed up at our door unannounced. He asked if he could have some more of my tumbled rocks as I had given him some in the past. I was like, oooookaaaaaay, uh, sure come on in. Well he proceeded right over to my display cabinet where I keep bowls of tumbled stones on top of it and filled up 2 ziplock quart bags full He chatted for a few minutes and then said, "Ok, thanks!" and then promptly left. I was standing there with my mouth open thinking "What the heck just happened?" And now I'm even more curious what his plans are for two over stuffed ziplock baggies full of tumbled rocks? LOL!

That comes from the land of WTF! Hmmmmm.... reminds me of a story. I used to work for a place that made boro glass sculptures. The broken stuff got thrown away until a guy pulls up and asks to buy it. Sure, says boss. So, we start putting broken stuff aside for him. For a few thousand dollars he would take it, repair it, sell it and buy a vacation home --- cash. So, after boss finds out abt the vaca home, he demands that we smash to pieces all the broken stuff. LOL!!!!!! That happened until they decided to pay me to do it. I was my own department for a long time. Never got a vacation home out of it, though.

Beautiful piece, Tela, but it won't be your best. Sometimes we have to let go to grow. Not always easy but necessary... Hang in there!!!

I share your pain, that is an awesome cab! Sometimes a rock is just a rock. Sometimes a lumpy, ugly, brown hunk of dirt you almost didn't pick up has something truly wonderful inside. Sometimes it is that one piece you agonize over which part to ruin while you make the cab. I hope somebody gave you top dollar for that one.

I can see why you wouldn't want to part with that particular cab. That is just fantastic. I think if I was to part with that one, it would need to be someone in the family so I could see it once in a while.

I'm really happy that it went to her. Plus, I'll get to wrap it. I know she will treasure it as much as I do.

It's a beautiful stone Tela and you should be forever proud to have those pictures and the knowledge of what a wonderful creation it is. Speaking of hoarding, I've made probably 100+ cabs since I first started doing this in February, and take a wild guess how many of them have made it outside of my garage or the possession of my immediate family? Exactly ONE heehee and it belongs to your Grandson. Hahaha www.flickr.com/photos/91547847@N07/9029058941/
