I use my little 6 inch Raytech saw with slabbing attachment and homemade gravity feed to slab small rocks. On hard stuff I have to cut a old piece of broken 100 grit sc grinding wheel every slab. So I cut a slice off the wheel and then I slice the slice into smaller slices like matchsticks. Can I put these in my barrel to use for the 60/90 grit? I have accumulated about a cup or so of this material. Should I put part 60/90 and part scrap sc wheel pieces or just use all little matchstick pieces?

Most grinding wheels are aluminum oxide Bill. And some low grade binder to keep them fused together.
I have a couple of 5 gallon buckets of 8" grinding wheels broke into pieces i use for removing limestone coating off coral in my big tumblers. Most of them are round balls from 1/2 to 2 inches.
Grinding wheels are not worth a crap for tumbling agates though. And they turn to mush pretty quickl:>Maybe great for labrodolite/felspar and other softies...

James these pieces are from my worn out 100 grit sc hard wheel off my lapidary arbor , arent these silicon carbide? How big is your "big" tumbler if you.put two inch hunks of grinding wheels in? LOL Is it the big tire in your pic?

Allright I emptyed the tumblers yesterday after running two weeks with 60/90 grit. My first tumble project and looks good to me. I reliaded the 1.5# barrell just like before with two tablespoons of 60/90. The 4# barrel I put two tablespoons of 60/90 and two tablespoons of little sticks of the 100 grit sc wheel. Last time I used 4 tablespoons of 60/90. We will see how it works out.

That tire failed Bill. But i do have several 35 pounders running and i do tumble rocks up to 1/2 pound and i do use those broken up grind wheel chunks for padding/cutting when those big rocks are being tumbled. Yes.the SC lapidary wheels are bad to the bone and should serve you well in the tumbler
