One of my projects over the last two years has been putting in my yard. My wife and I built a home on 1.5 acres and I started the landscaping in June 2011. It has consumed most of my free time ever since. We started with a raw, never developed or cleared lot. Before I hit it with a chainsaw, you literally could not walk it for all the interlocking cedar. To save money, and because I am an idtiot, I did the work myself. Other than basic drainage away from the structure, my builder did little more than scrape the debris off the front of the lot. I have now finished the yard. With very few exceptions, the placing of landscape boulders and a partial scrape of the front of the lot, I did the work myself with hand tools...in central Texas..through limestone..
I have designed landscaping and drainage plans in the past, but I have never actually installed one. The entire process took a hair under 2 years to complete. The cost savings by the end of the process was between 1/3 and 1/5 of the bid prices and, I did more than I had bid. I am proud of it, which is why I am posting some photos; but I will NEVER again attempt anything like this again lol.
Recently I finished my pond and posted some photos. This is the rest of it, now completed.
First photo is a partial front yard shot before I started. I think this was two days before we closed.
Front yard now:
Back yard before: Does anyone want some cedar? I have LOTS of it...photo was taken a few weeks before close ~10' off the rear porch.
Back yard now:
View from porch before, taken the week of closing.
View from porch now:
I do not think there are words to express the relief that it is finally complete lol. I have released the albatros that was chained to my neck the past two years..if anyone has a shotgun handy, please, kill it
