Hand2mouthmining graciously directed me to "area 54", and hours of fun collecting! I'm partial to the jaspers, poppy jaspers in particular. Kris Rowe has called this variety, Panoche Paisley Poppy.

Hi Mel, thanks for looking. Wish you were still in this area for some poppy hunting!

Nice colors and should yield a lot of useful material once cut.

*L* Me too! I'd be there in two shakes if I was still in Commiefornia. Nothing I like better than hunting poppies and those are really unusual. Remind me very much of the poppies in Big Sandy creek up at Indian Valley....Mel

x2 on Mel's comments regarding both your finds and living in Commiefornia. Seriously, that's pretty awesome that you walked away with so much! Looking forward to seeing your slabs. Paul

Dang! I HAVE to go on another of Kris's field trips. Thanks for sharing all your finds. Thanks for bringing this back. I suspect this is "Densely Welded Volcanic Tuff." Do you know which volcanic flow it originated in?

Do you know which volcanic flow it originated in? I, personally, do not know from which flow it originated. I suspect that by "Densely Welded Volcanic Tuff," you mean rhyolite, that is certainly possible. Many "jaspers" are, or originate from rhyolite. However, this area is a prime example of melange. Much of the jasper, I believe, is radiolarian in origin ("Franciscan chert"). There is also a good deal of material that originates from subductive metamorphosis (jade, serpentine, glaucophane ["Blue G"]). California geology is never simple.
