Thanks for bringing this back. I suspect this is "Densely Welded Volcanic Tuff." Do you know which volcanic flow it originated in? I, personally, do not know from which flow it originated. I suspect that by "Densely Welded Volcanic Tuff," you mean rhyolite, that is certainly possible. Many "jaspers" are, or originate from rhyolite. However, this area is a prime example of melange. Much of the jasper, I believe, is radiolarian in origin ("Franciscan chert"). There is also a good deal of material that originates from subductive metamorphosis (jade, serpentine, glaucophane ["Blue G"]). California geology is never simple. Thanks for your reply. Yes, about everything happened to California. Melange is a great term!
