First of all, slag glass is prone to having bubbles in it. Study your material carefully with back lighting before deciding where to cut. Since slag glass is fairly soft and chips easily, my suggestion would be a lapidary blade. Tile blades may cause a lot of chipping. It can be wet ground just like rocks, but start out at 220 grit, again to prevent chipping. I haven't worked much with glass, but I've had good luck polishing with cerium oxide on leather.
Oh, and have a pair of tweezers and some sort of magnification handy. You will get splinters from glass or obsidian.

I will add to this only by asking, what do you plan to make?
If the goal is cabochons, then (of course!) Don is spot on. If the goal is tumbling the chipping and blade are less important. If you want to make a sphere then the blade is unimportant at all.
These are just my examples. What are your plans?
