I got these two slabs from an old rockhound in Montana - same guy I got a bunch of dryhead from. That's not to say that they are from Montana - he could have gotten it anywhere and he's in his upper 80's so they could be very old stuff for all I know. Anyway, I'm hoping someone recognizes either one of them... #1 #2 Thanks for looking!

I am not certain but I think that first one is named Julie. Sorry, but I just could not pass that up. Whatever you paid for those you got a bargain. Gorgeous. Jim

Jim Hahaha wow I think you're right Jim! damn...you're good. Julie is the old man's daughter and my lady's best friend and they were a free gift from her which is why I'm trying to identify them before I cut them up and make something nice for her. After posting the photos I'm thinking #2 looks like some type of wood?

I may be far off on this but the top one with red looks an awful lot like some Myrickite I cut not long ago. Is it agatized or opalized?

Hi Jim, anything's possible but those don't look like any Myrickites I've seen -- not that I've seen everything that's out there. You might search for "myrickite images" and compare. These are the Myrickite stones I cut. There can be lots of variations:

Have some Pastelite from so cal that resembles that exactly.
mostly grey or whitish but every once in while find one with twirls and red blood lines.

Hi Everyone: I want to make it clear I'm not an expert on Myrickite and I said up front I might be very wrong. The only reason I knew the stones I cut had cinnabar is that the person who provided them knew for sure what they were.
Helen, there are many red hues in agates that aren't due to cinnabar/mercury. Iron is the usual red coloring agent but there could be others. Without chemical analysis there'd be no way for me to know what's colored yours.

In polite answer to Helen's question: The color quality of red produced by mercury v. iron is different to my eye. I would indeed think your stones are mercury based. The purity of red seems to show this. That being said I am victim to color balance issues of various components of the chain that sets the image on my screen (a laptop at work). Mercury seems to be a more pure red. Not cherry like or tomato-ey at all. Tommy I would say your sample conforms to the many images I scanned online for myrickite/cinnabar in quartz.
