My son lives in Tempe and has graciously offered to let us stage our AZ invasion from his apartment so we are really looking forward to spending time with him and spending a few days at either Quartzite or Tucson. Other than the obvious (rocks) what is the main drawing point of Quartzite vs. the Tucson shows? Are the two inter-connected or are they two separate events that occur at two specific times? If you had to choose between them what would it be?
I really need to do more digging in and reading about this obviously haha.

Sorry Cathy, I probably should have started a new thread instead of latching on to yours! :-)

Other than the obvious (rocks) what is the main drawing point of Quartzite vs. the Tucson shows? Are the two inter-connected or are they two separate events that occur at two specific times? If you had to choose between them what would it be? They're not interconnected except that some dealers show at both, and they occur at different times with some overlap. Choosing between them depends on what you want to buy. The Tucson shows (there are about 30 different ones in various parts of town) mainly emphasize higher-end faceted goods from international sources although there are plenty of vendors in lots of different categories. The biggest shows (AGTA,GJX and others) are wholesale to dealers only and proof of a gem or jewelry-oriented business is required for admittance: business license, resale license and sometimes invoices for substantial gem/jewelry purchases. Tucson has offerings for every taste and budget but it's grown so huge it can be somewhat overwhelming. You can't begin to see it all in just a few days but it's an event everyone should experience at least once. Be prepared for outrageously high lodging prices (if you can find any), car rental rates and parking problems. Quartzsite has big traffic issues too but it's geared more toward agate and jasper people. In some ways it's a huge flea market with much more than rocks on display. But it's the place to buy rough because prominent dealers bring their best materials there from all over the world. Unless you have an RV lodging can be an issue. I haven’t gone for several years because I no longer have a camper. There are motels at Blythe, CA on the CA/AZ border and Quartzsite is just a few miles to the east. It would probably be smart to make motel reservations early. For those interested in RV-ing, here’s a list of RV parks at Quartzsite: www.quartzsitebusinesschamber.com/camp.htmI’m sure others will have more to add to this. Rick

I've been trying to get our rock club here in Cedar City, UT excited about Quartzite. Most of us plan to attend during the Pow Wow (3rd weekend in Jan) so we can join in the potluck & tag along on one or two of the outings. I hope someone wants to lead a trip to the chrysocolla mines near Bowse, AZ. Lynn

I will most likely be there through the month of January again this coming season. I might even set up at the Pow Wow this year. Not sure yet. I will have to figure out what to do with my boys first.
