Wow that's gorgeous, I'll bet you're hankering to get a chunk of that one and I'll bet it would cost an arm and a leg.

Nice!!----- about the only place I've seen is that mine in northern nevada --- the one that was on the treasure show -- they have an area where it turns out "black opal" --- think they had a chunk that was about 35 # and @1000$ /# ---- but for $40.00 a day you can dig in that area too --- had some small "cabs" of that stuff for @ $10,000 a carat ( if I remember right ) ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) --- I'd prob take my chances and dig there for a week ! ;D ;D

I've seen that piece in person and it really is quite spectacular, BUT...
This comes from the Royal Peacock claims, Last years treasure show stopped there, but this year Becky visited the Bonanza mine which was $40 /day to dig. You can sift through the tailings piles at Royal Peacock for that much, but they charge $145/day for acess to the virgin bank digging and no guarantees you'll find anything of value- its all a gamble, (at least the slot machines have some programmed percentage payback)
Complicating matters, northern Nevada opal is notoriously unstable, unless you find a nice petrified log like that, most of the black crystal precious opal needs to be kept under water in a jar or else it crazes, cracks and crumbles into nothing.
Sure is pretty stuff though...

If this stone was available, yes I would definitely try to acquire a piece. But trying to find stuff like this would be like winning the lottery. Rally, thanks for the info. I thought of a trip to the virgin valley but I think it wouldn't be worth it like you said. we can only dream right??

That is one awesome piece of wood!
Can you imagine having something like that in your display case??
WOW!!!!
I took a look at the cabs on the site and I don't like any of them.I think the mosaic design looks cheesy!

Virgin Valley Opal is the MOST colorful- but as stated also the Most unstable- But if I lived in driving distance- I take a shot for $40/ day- what the heck- you only live once- and has anyone really done a pay to dig site and been disappointed? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Sure you may not come away with a Woodward Haul- but you were still out hounding- enjoying what nature has to offer- and maybe coming away with a little "personal" treasure (nothing like digging it up yourself huh?)

VV opal is unstable, but there are lots of grades and types that are natural stable. Ive noticed the "conk" type as Tony is pointing out through the link, usally has a higher precentage of being stable than the crystal or black types. I have a limb that is very stable, but the fire is few and far between, in small vienlets running down the limb. I showed it on here once when we were talking about limb cast.
