I didn't know where to put this question and since this is my go to section I figured I'd post here.
I have a friend going to AZ to look at rock shops. Not sure where exactly. She is going to look for wood. I was wondering, other than rainbow wood, what's the best thing to look for in AZ? Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question- I'm an east Coastie.

Tela, did you mean "what is the best pet wood to look for"? Or "what is the nicest lapidary stone in AZ to look for"? #2 is a huge question!

She's looking for pet wood, but your question is good, too.

If she is going anywhere near Holbrook I'd suggest a visit to Jim Gray's Petrified Wood Company. Huge store with lots of petrified wood including some that is not rainbow. If near Kingman, Colbaugh Processing is a great place for turquoise. Otherwise if she wants rocks native to Arizona I'd say chrysocolla, turquoise, pet wood, and any other copper mineral rocks but I'm sure others would have a better idea than I do.

One of the best rock shops in the whole world is in Holbrook and that is Jim Gray's as Drocknut said. There are others all around the Holbrook area and if in the area I would hit them all. Quartzite is not in full swing yet but there is one shop that was open all year up by the motel 8 can't recall the name they have a lot of Brazilian material that's where the original owner was from. The Kingman area is great for turquoise a few shops are in the area, if they make it there you must check out Oatman there are many mine's in this area and a really great old west town to visit. If They are near the New Mexico and Arizona border the Zuni Indian reservation is a must they have many shops that sell Old Turquoise its pricey but some you can't get any where else unless you get lucky and find it in an old estate. Jamie's rock pile I hear is a great source I have heard from others on here about her great rocks. George P.M. Me If you want more info. on more in Arizona I have been all over mining and just walking looking for old mining towns. The Bisbee area has a few to along with a great mine tour this area was a world class copper mining area and had some of the greatest druzy copper specimen's ever found, some of the shop's still have a few they are fun to look at but hard to obtain at a good price.

Both, I believe. She is taking her parents who really enjoy collecting.

Pet wood is very hard on the blade! Jim Gray's is the best! Be careful while hunting! Make sure you are not on private property or somebody's claim! Sheri
