Back when I was in college, some friends and I used to collect specimens for a biological supply house. My friends wanted to collect whale lice and whale barnacles at the last whaling station operating in the US at Pt. Molate, Calif. I was asked to take a tour with them and it was freaking gross. Blood and guts almost knee deep and the smell simply cannot be described except it weren't nice at all *L*. I decided to opt out of that particular job which was perhaps stupid since my friends made a bundle on that particular collecting effort. My dad of course was a taxidermist and I worked for the college museum but some jobs were just to dirty even for me *L*......Mel

Seems like that station has been closed for a long time Too bad Mike from Dirty Jobs couldn't do that on TV once.

Yeah mark, I know, I'm old *L* I graduated college in the late 60's and believe the whaling station was closed in maybe 70 or 71. Most the area burned down in a fire not long later I think. Was something to see but grinding whales up for dogfood and chicken food protein was not nice. The guys using those flensing knives on poles were really big fellers and really carved those whales up fast. My buddies fixed sandwiches for a dive one time and as a joke made them from sliced roasted whale. Really yucky! Tasted like liver with sugar and butter on it and real stringy too.....Mel

When I was young, we eat whale frequently, just a normal thing when you are from Nantucket. Toothed whale meat is pretty good, baleen whale is not. My first diving job was at the Pt. Molate whaling station recovering lost tools. The water around the plant was teeming with small sharks eating scraps, and spilled guts. The sharks were of no problem to divers, but onlookers did not know that, and thought we were crazy. The pay was pretty good. Woody

Somehow I think he was expecting it...that certainly would have been the wrong session of rock/paper/scissors to loose!

I was there for this one, Florence Ore was exciting that year. Did you get covered with whale parts? lol Here in Cali we get them all the time. Because they tow them out to sea the Condors have nothing to eat. Therefore we have no more condors!

Shoot Scott, why not go to Borneo or Africa for vacation so you can try ape or people meat? Whales are pretty evolutionarily advanced. I kind of draw the line at eatin things too far up the evolutionarily scale *L*.....Mel

people? wow - Ape? Not. Too much disease risk. Macaque or new world tailed monkeys? Probably not. Too much disease risk. Lemur? I'd have to do the entire deal from hunt/take to processing to food prep. I'd decide for sure on the way. I will not prey on truly endangered species. Politically endangered species are fair game as far as I am concerned. Also, I definitely will NOT eat starfish. I draw the line at starfish.

You can eat starfish? I did not know that. When I took invertebrate zoology, we ended the class with a giant invertebrate feed. We had a table full of awful looking and tasting critters ( crab, lobster, crawdads are about the only invertebrates I'll eat) but we didn't have no dang starfish. I expect they would be pretty awful. I felt sorry for the octopus. Didn't want to see it cooked. I had a pet one for awhile and loved that little rascal....Mel
