Howdy folks, Just a little tour of rocks from the North Cady Mountains for Christmas and to torture Susan, of course *L*. merry Christmas all!.....Mel First, just a big ole vein piece of Cadys red moss from Basin Rd after a flood. Another but denser stuff same trip: What we call pink lace from near the Hidden Canyon Geode Beds: Blue Moss from same area: Back to Basin Road outwash of Afton Canyon monster hunk of flawless moss: Baby Crap yellow moss cobble: Basin Rd. red moss: Another type of vein material from the Hidden canyon site. My buddy Phil found a large vein piece of this that was one of the best agates I've ever seen.

Jim, These finds spans maybe 30 years of going out once or more per year. Most recent stuff would have been about six years ago before my Texas move. Much of the Basin Road material was found on a single hunt when we hit it right after big flash flood that left a lot of gravel exposed on the surface. Last time I went out though, the wife and I did pretty good even with a lot of extra sand. It's all mostly just luck and walking a little further than the other guy.....Mel

Love the red moss in the first picture here. Just gives an absolutely stunning contrast. Also adore the bubblegum pink one in your second post.

Scott, Since I navigate by sight, that is a tough question to answer. It's kind of NW of pepto Bismol. From Pepto, we drive out the Mojave trail ( the one with the trail markers) for a couple of miles? I always look for a fairly narrow canyon going off to the left ( south) almost opposite a trail marker. There is a faint dirt track up the canyon that goes up to a very very steep four wheel drive climb. This is a first gear climb and I actually got my truck caught one time between the walls at the top. There is a very distinct pyramid/cone shaped hill at this entrance. After you go up the climb, you follow a good track for a mile or so and then you'll see a fork, one part goes straight ahead and that's not the one you want. You turn off on the right fork and go down the terrace wall to a camp fire ring ( ours) on the for side of a dry wash. The canyons full of agate and geodes are above the campsite on the same side of the dry wash. Pretty distinct sheep trails should lead into them but I don't know really how to direct you except to say the place is a maze of canyons all with agate. You go up a dry wash west of the camp for a couple of hundred yards and over the top of a ridge to your right and should drop into a canyon with a big talus slope to your left. The geodes are often huge and drop from the high cliffs above the slope. The top of the hill above the slope is where the pink lace came from. The geodes are teardrop shaped, often huge and full of crystals. Lots of plume and sagenite in the canyon too. I'll check out Google maps and see if I can pinpoint the location better. You can actually back down on the Mojave trail from the hilltop where the agate beds are......Mel

OK, I think I can spot the canyon turn off. Looks like a bit over a mile along the Mojave trail from the rd that turns off the Mojave trail for Pepto hill. Only thing is, I cannot see the dirt track in even though I think I can see our campsite along the wash. I suppose it could have washed out where the steep climb is. I can't get quite enough magnification without the sat map getting to blurry to read. Like I said, I could drive right to it but danged difficult to see landmarks from a vertical pic......Mel

Dang ... so tempting and I'm not saying no for sure but we've been talking about it all day and it's SO close to Quartzite that the responsible thing is to save for that big trip. We aren't just doing Quartzite we are staying almost a week all together - headed on to Phoenix to visit a family member then down to Tucson to take care of some business on my property there. It's about seven and a half hours to Pepto Bismo hill from our house - no chance of making a day trip out of it - so we'd have to camp again or stay in Barstow... Definitely thinking about it still though.

You may have another coming. I'm trying to get out there and that might be the best time.
Still working out details.
I'm actually looking at doing a day trip to the desert next week either tuesday or thursday to get out of civilization for a few hours...don't know where yet.

rockncajun, you don't even have to ask. Be at my place at 5am sunday and this time you ride in my truck. Seriously, you are in, let's work out the details. This could turn into a mini RTH North Cady's gathering on short notice! haha

For those of you going out on the 12th, are any of you feeling generous and willing to fill up a large flat rate for a sucker stuck up in Minnesota in -20 degrees F who daydreams of this beautiful material in the N Cady mountains? Price negotiable ?. I just love the moss and plume agate pictures I've seen from the area. I would love to polish some slabs of those and tumble some as well! PM me if you're feeling so generous.
