Great variety of cabs and beautifully done! My guess is the grey residue from the rhodochrosite is left over manganese that did not get carbonated.

Thanks everybody! Manganese would make sense in the rhodochrosite. It's kind of flaky looking. Larry, I think that Rhodonite comes from Wrightwood or thereabouts.

A lot of terrific cabs there. Love the CA Rhodonite, makes great looking cabs, and the kickbutt Montana, pet wood, rhodochrosite and the tuxedo agate (I gotta get me some of that).

Too many beauties to pick a fav. This is a really great group of cabs. I learned something, too. I have a rhodonite like yours and bought it as a rhodonite in quartz. It's a dead ringer for your CA stuff.

Rick, I have no clue what it is. It doesn't seem to have any grain, it's kind of what I call buttery or plasticky (rather than porcelainy), and quite soft. I guess we could ask Paul (orchids9). Hi Susan, I don't know Paul but I'll try to look him up. I finally found an image of a cab I cut from what I think is the mystery "Blue Ice" Chinese material. It developed some pits so it's not ready for Prime Time but it looks very similar to yours. I have a piece of rough and some slabs that show the metallic inclusions that I'll try to remember to photograph when my "photo studio" is set up after New Years (my wife claims the dining room table during the Holidays.) I'm also curious to learn if you have any location info on the chrysocolla in quartz cab you posted. I've been working some very similar material I purchased from an Orange County dealer several years ago and have forgotten where he said it came from. Rick

The Laguna Beach is a nice piece. Usually coastal California jaspers are found in the creeks that empty out into the sea. The jasper comes from high up in the hills originally.
I also like your rhodonite, which is probably from near Wrightwood.

What a treat scrolling through your specimens Susan. All are great, but I really liked the California Rhodonite, the shape & the coloring.

all of the Wrightwood rhodonite I have ever seen is a very deep bold color. Not soft and light like that at all. Sadly none of it was mine.

That was one awesome bunch of cabs. The Rhodo with the matrix is my favorite.

Wow, so many beauties to choose from. I like the volcanic sinter too. So Cal Amerinds used to use that to make points. I think my favorites are the Lavic moss agate, the Dryhead and the Rosetta. Is that Hornbrook rhodonite? I gave a big block of similar stuff to a buddy who was supposed to cut out a cube for a sphere and send me the scraps. Last I saw of it *L* It tends to be lighter colored than the Randsburg material.....Mel

Back in July I posted my petrified wood estate purchase which contained several pieces of petrified wood labeled Butte Valley Nevada. They don't seem to have the exact color scheme or your cab, but they do seem to share the same grain pattern. Funny thing, I don't see any reference to Butte Valley on the Web. Don't know if it helps. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/60934/petrified-wood-rarer-material-lotsaphotos 11-15 Lowell

Thanks again everybody. All I know about the rhodonite is that it is CA, versus AU or (? somewhere in the midwest they have it). You're right Lowell, the wood does look a bit like the Butte Valley.
