I like that tiger iron I'm sure you've been asked before, but have you considered a tutorial for your hearts? If any one has it down, you sure do.

No. Not yet. But it one of my projects I'd like to do. I do feel like I got process honed down to a fine craft. Just finding it hard to hold a video camera and grind at the same time. But I'll figured that out too! Nonetheless rock hearts are finicky I worked 5 hours grinding & polishing on 4 hearts yesterday and didn't finish a one. I got tired and the sun went down Double dome and 2 of them were pretty thick. so it took more time to grind If you ever come to Phoenix you can hold the video camera I'll be happy to ham it up while doing a rock'n heart tutorial Happy New Years! Ed, cool hearts in progress. Have you ever thought about a tripod for your video camera? Just a thought.

Ed I would love to move out West or even visit. I would totally help you make the video! Or, just watch you make one. I seem to recall you have a pixie, right?

This is the time visit, Tela I call it the rock season. All the rock shows are about Yep I have the Pixie. I use it mostly for polishing I need the courser wheels Its a great machine on the hearts.
But I really like to work on the Lortone outside Enjoy the expandable drum Belting a heart is really great way to pre- finish the heart then to the Pixie And belting is the best way to finalize the profile the finicky part although wheels can be just as successful
The thing I'm bad at is not taking the time in preforming the 2 angel wings to match I just won't grind to the line.
Inevitably 1 wing is misshapen to the other side I always think I can even it out- in the final profile grinding but that's tough best to get the 2 halves perfect Ed

Looking good Ed!!! Can't wait for the final product My hearts don't hold a candle to yours but I find i have the exact same issue- If you don't get the sides symmetric right off the bat they are really, really hard to even out after the fact Keep rocking and posting Happy 2014 Bill

After watching a couple of young members at my club struggling with getting hearts nicely shaped I had a bit of a think and a play and came up with an easier way of doing it. My idea was to not make a heart, make a simple triangular cab first and then turn that into a heart. Shape a triangle with slightly convex edges and round off two corners. A heart without the (struggling for a name here) the dipped down bit at the top, cleavage??? Shape your almost triangle into a cab, sand it through all stages but you needn't polish. Now that you have a nice evenly shaped triangular cab cut the dippy down bit (cleavage) at the top on a fairly fine grit wheel, (so any mistakes happen slowly) sand and polish. If you are going to make a double sided heart just redop it reversed and shape your triangular cab again, ignoring the cleavage, then as before shape the cleavage last. Give it a go, you will be surprised how easy and quick it is. Paul

I see that shape forming up well, Paul excellent idea !! more than one way to beat a heart...mostly
yes mistakes happen quick good advice again about grinding the profile with a finer grade
I have done very few single stone hearts using a template to draw them out as stated earlier I'm impatient to grind to the line I even have a difficult time doing a teardrop shape to specs
O well.... I like to say: rock'n hearts aren't perfect but they are unique Ed

Yes Ed your hearts are unique, I really like them. A few quick comments on your reply. Unless you have a particular piece of jewellery you are cutting a stone to fit into don't get too hung up about your templates, use them as a guide only. Have a look at other nice cabs on here, the nicest looking ones are often the freeforms that let the stone dictate the finished shape. Concentrate on getting a nice symmetry or pleasing shape, cut outside the line or cut the line away if a flaw appears. who cares about specs? Every stone is unique, make the most of them. Cheers Paul

Allright! Here’s the hematite jasper BIF heart completed But its tiger iron…mostly Penny heart size. The cut came out well. And the chrysocombo. Big heart that maybe only a rock hound may appreciate. Actually the 1 half is cuporite…mostly The other half comes from Beef stock Thanks for looking guys & keep on rock’n ! EdMohs
