Thinking that the fairly intense storm we had the other day had likely pulled sand off the beaches, and that the weather was going to be good, we went to the Moolack beach area on the Oregon coast, just north of Newport. This being one of the best rock and legal fossil areas on the north coast. We went in time to walk the afternoon tide out. Well, the weather was great, but the beach is sanded in as much or more than we have seen in 20 years. Had to hunt for a rock to look at. All the beaches we saw from Lincoln City to Newport were flat with sand. It looks at this time, rocking on the Oregon coast may well be a few and far between situation this year. Anyone planning a trip would be advised to look into it ahead if rocks are the primary objective.

Every year that we vacationed on the Oregon shore we enjoyed going to a little roadside park south of Florence (probably about 10 miles or so) and walk the dogs on the beach. This is where we acquired our interest in rocks, agates in particular. We found to our dismay that just because the area was loaded with agates one day, that we could return a couple days later and see nothing but sand! In some cases it appeared that several feet of sand had covered over our hunting spots. Still, year after year we would return with varying degrees of success.

We are well aware of the ever-changing beach conditions as you described, this year is thus far different than what we have seen in 20+ years of twice a year, or more, visits. Got a link sent in this A.M. saying the D river [runs from D Lake to ocean] at Lincoln City got so plugged up with sand in the storm, it has to be dug out to prevent flooding of properties adjoining the lake. I didn't put this up to be other than informative, hopefully someone won't come a long way for not much. Larry

yes the coast is well stocked with sand there has not been any sand pulling storms this year yet. Also its by chance sometimes I have been there when there was tons of agates everywhere and times when nothing.

Larry I should've also added that hounding in OR is but one added bennie as we come there more to enjoy the sights than anything else. While hounding and things lapidary are very important to me, they fall in comparison to the enjoyment I get out of visiting Oregon.

The beaches on the coast have been sanded for two years now...The best luck is walking the far banks and see if any fossils fell off the walls of the high banks..Fogerty beach, and Lost Creek beach are great places to hunt fossils too........... Two years ago Moolack was crazy fun with huge gravel bars as far as you could walk! Pulled some great fossils out of there....
