Found some really nice Serpentine the other day and since I have the day off, I have the whole afternoon to devote to slabbing and cabbing. Yay! The hardness seems to be pretty consistent throughout the stone, about mohs 5, so undercutting shouldn't be too much of a problem. Wish me luck!

That looks alot like Plasma agate from Clear Creek in San Benito county, CA. Is that where you found it? Lynn

That looks alot like Plasma agate from Clear Creek in San Benito county, CA. Is that where you found it? Lynn You know, that's exactly what I thought it looked like too. It was found near one of my favorite 'honey holes' in a creek bed that runs through my property and back behind a forested area...I'm about 45 minutes NE of Seattle...I have some other confirmed serpentine specimens that look a lot like these, which is why I'm going with that ID. It's also relatively soft stuff...a knife blade easily scratches it. Either way, it's interesting looking material.

Just wanted to add that many of the rocks from here are composed of a multitude of various materials with serpentine being a very common component. Probably the only definitive way of knowing for sure is to send it to a lab. I've got some possible jadeite specimens I'm planning on sending to the UW for analysis. Maybe I'll include some of this material also.

juzwuz _ Sorry, I should have laid a quarter or something down for reference, but they're about 2" long 3/4" wide 1/2" deep or so. I never did get around to cabbing them. lol. Spent the whole day cutting other rocks up. ash - They all came from one specimen. For some reason I always cut my preforms in angular, brick like shapes. They usually end up on the trim saw after that and then on to my genie...That is, unless I'm feeling lazy, in which case they stay roughly the same shape and I just through them in the loto and call them pendants when they come out. jamesp - Come on up! Lots of good rock-critter hunting in my small corner of the world.
