Before slicing it you might think about polishing a little surface "window" to give you a better idea of what's inside.

I would work it on SiC expandos to sand and polish a big window then keep it as a specimen. My experience with that type of opal is you don't want to cut it in oil or it will fall apart even if it looks solid to begin with. If you polish with cerium rub bar soap into the surface you want to polish before polishing, it will keep the cerium from getting into the micro fractures, just clean up with water and a toothbrush, not the one you use for your teeth.
