Hey Dave,
I would really like to go with you on this trip. Oh wait, I am going with you on this trip!!! Ha-hah, can you tell I'm sorta excited about it?!?! We are gonna have a blast and I have a feeling we are gonna find something spectacular! It's going to be a little windy out there though so don't forget your jacket this time...

Went out there a couple of months ago. Ended up with a five gallon bucket of mostly sphere type clear agates with inclusions. Been in the rotary for a few weeks now because they are so difficult to tumble. This weekend will complete the third stage (400F). From there it's on to the final polishing stage so by next week they should be ready. Also, I will be going to the Walker Ranch trip in mid April. Maybe I'll meet some of you out there.

Trip Report: Driving west to the Texas desert, we are greeted with a fabulous sunset. We prepare for a day of rockhunting on a chilly morning at the Antelope Lodge in Alpine Texas (@arrowheadave). These are the cabins at the Antelope Lodge. Cozy, and the Rock Shop on site is something to see. The hills in the area have bare rock tops that appear pretty ominous! The convoy from Alpine to the agate ranches goes through Marfa and then passes a Border Patrol checkpoint on the way back. Make sure you are a U.S. citizen or have the proper paperwork to be here if you go hunting in this part of the world! Hoping this windmill does its job as water is mighty scarce here. Getting agate locating instructions from our guide. You would be pretty blind to miss them once you get to the right area, but they only appear in certain large zones out there. Poor picture of a rainbow in the distance. It was a beautiful sight as we began to unload buckets. The day started at about 36 degrees with a stiff wind and then it started sleeting. But as we Texans know, wait a few minutes for the weather to change, and sure enough it turned out to be sunny and perfect for the rest of the day! See! There is the sun and we will shed these jackets soon. This is where you go to watch the famous Marfa Lights at night. We missed it as a long day of rockhunting in the desert will wipe you out and all you want to do at night is sleep! This is the scenery heading back home... I missed out on a day of photos when my camera was left behind in our vehicle that didn't make it through the rough ranch roads. We had to bail and jump in the back of a pickup of some very helpful rockhounds who took us the rest of the way to the hunting site. Thank you Cindy and Dennis!! Here are some specimens that have only been cleaned. We should have some pics of cut, slabbed, and polished pieces in the near future. I like this toothy smiling agate. Its getting ready to put the bite on you! This piece has several layers of water-level agate topped off with crystals. And a little banded agate that is split almost perfectly in half already. Thanks for looking! ~Roland

Hi: I found this post on line when I searched Singleton Ranch. I had rock hunted there back in the late 60's and again 5 years ago. Found great pieces of Marfa agate, actually a few spectacular pieces, and also an arrowhead on our last visit! Is Janette still at the ranch? I tried to phone her just to say hi, and the number is disconnected. She was quite the woman, 90 when we last visited.....Any info would be appreciated. How long have you been going to the Singleton Ranch? I live in Illinois, so I doubt if I will be back since I am now widowed. (Tried to add some images, but this site wouldn't allow it although they were the right size)

We go on guided trips with Teri Smith (terismithrockhunts.com). She is the one who is in contact with the ranch owners of several places that she takes people. Lots of material to be found at this ranch still. I have a large amount that I am constantly processing! In order to post pictures here you have to link to an external photo site such as Photobucket. There is a thread somewhere with instructions... Cheers, Roland

Thanks Roland for the reply. We found this place by accident back in the 60's and think we might have been the first rockhounds on the property. Great stuff just littering the ground. When we returned, had to look a little harder, but still a lot of great material. I'll try to post pics of two especially nice large pieces, too good to cut or tumble.

I don't know if it is me, or this forum, but I find it impossible to find a previous conversation, can't load pictures, very difficult to find anything! I am very efficient with my computer, but this forum is impossible.
