You know, when I worked in Ventura County, CA most every winter, we'd have several downpours where probably millions and millions of gallons of water ran into the ocean from our main rivers and creeks. The problem lies with the fact the freaking greenies have not allowed new reservoirs to be built for years and years in California. If more water was impounded, California could plan for droughts much more effectively. You cannot continue to allow cities to expand and population to boom without conserving more water in reservoirs and California is a major breadbasket for the entire country so we will all pay the price for this greenie stupidity in increased food prices. As for the damn smelt, I'm a people first kind of guy and I don't eat a lot of freaking fish anyway....Mel

Smelt isn't fish. They are aquatic rodents, but do make good sturgeon bait. At somewhere around 12 YO I took 2nd place in a smelt eating contest, never have eaten one since. Sabre52 Mel you are spot-on about the demise of water management. What would be happening to the smelt right now if there were no dams to release water from to help them run upstream to spawn? After Mt St Helens erupted in 1980. there was no smelt run on the Cowlitz river for several years, and scientists said they would never be back. Well, there was no human intervention, there are no smelt hatcheries, but this year there was a huge smelt run on the Cowlitz. Funny the way the environmentalists actions cause the farmland that used to be desert to return to it's original state, then they say "see, more proof of global warming". Talk about a self perpetuating institution...
