When I got my 24" HP saw (6-7 years ago?), I bought a 55 gal barrel of food grade mineral oil. Figured it would be cheaper that way over the years. What I didn't think about back then was...
Can mineral oil go bad?
I have the barrel stored in my non- environmentally controlled garage. So, being in Florida, it can get kinda hot in there. Although, probably never over 100°.
I was just out in my shed where the saw is and opened it up. It seems to smell a little "off".
I can live with the different smell, but I'll probably put an oil change for the saw on my list.
So, other than a change in smell, is there any change to the lubrication properties of mineral oil over time?
Thanks for any help with an unusual question.

It should not go bad. As far as I know, food grade is synthetic mineral oil but not vegetable based so should not go rancid. I don't know why the smell would change unless it picked up plastic smell from drum?

I've seen the small change in Mineral oil.... depends on what rocks you've been cutting and how long between filterings. There are some rocks out there that when cut just plain stink, and permanently colorize the oil too.

Should be pretty much OK forever. Like John said, it isn't vegetable-derived. I think it's a crude oil fraction that has been specially purified, same as petroleum jelly, just a liquid.

Thanks for the answers. It shouldn't go bad seems to be the bottom line.
As to the smell, I guess if I were sitting out in that hot shed for so long, then I would probably start to smell too! The oil in the barrel in my garage smells normal. Which is a good thing as I still have over 40 gallons of it left.
Thanks again.
