I am going to a wedding in September, and all I can think about is the hounding I want to do! We will be in Taos, but I am willing to drive to get to some good collecting. Anyone with info, please?

A while back I picked up a Gem Trails of New Mexico book on Amazon for cheap, they show several sites near Taos. Tim

I live in Albuquerque.... what kind of rocks you looking to collect? that way I'll know better where to direct you. Hi Phil, thanks for the help! I am flying into Albuquerque and then driving on to Taos. I will be traveling with my family which includes 2 ten year old girls and an eight year old girl, so any collecting I will be able to do then will be limited to surface finds. After we settle in Taos, I will have a day to do some serious hounding. As far as types of rocks, I love them all! I am partial to plumes and moss agates, but I really am not picky. The most important thing to me is not having to drive to far and not needing a 4wd...Thanks for any suggestions!!!

Plumes and moss agates? wish I cold find those myself! Other than the Rio Puerco, which is either south of Albuquerque by Los Lunas or west of Albuquerque by the casino, and because of our ongoing forest fires, your best bets are going to be to use that book mentioned above and ask once in Taos what is still open and available. They've shut down most of the USFS lands already this year. If you can find a rock shop in Taos, (Google?) they'll probably be your best bet to find out what's still accessible. I was going to suggest west of Cuba, Abiquiu and Coyote areas but there are big fires going on now, and the areas are closed. Not much help, sorry. Oh.... forgot to tell you, if, while out collecting, it looks like it's going to rain, get out as quickly as you can. Our dirt roads turn to grease and sand bogs very quickly, and if you had to cross thru an arroyo on your way in, leave even faster.... and if that arroyo is running when you get there, don't try and cross it.... it'll be quicksand. You'll just have to wait till it stops running and firms up. Could take several hours! SO get out quickly and safely.

I'm so sorry about the fires, I hope you and yours are safe and the fires end soon. The safety tips are well received and appriciated!

There is at least one man who often sell rocks, crystals, etc out with the other hwy vendors at the Rio Grande Bridge (just ask the way to the gorge). Folks there will know who he is and how to contact him if he's not out in the hills collecting. Staurolite twins (fairy crosses) are quite common on the road side cuts in some areas. Check for them if you do much driving around. Tom
