Picked this up. I love it!! The story is it is from the Southern California coast from an area that is no longer accessible. Seems to be a fine grained jasper of some sort. Any guesses? Seen anything like it? Picture is DRY.

I think they are calling it California Picasso or some such. I don't know the deets on the deposit, but it's supposedly inaccessible. Nice looking stone though!

Nice! Don't know what it is called but I've found one similar cobble on the beach at the mouth of the Ventura River. I'd classify it as a chert but there is also some fine material the Chumash used for points called "sinter" that is very silicified and shows some wild pattens too. Think the sinter tends to be more layered though....Mel

Thanks guys Yes, they are calling it Pacific Coast Picasso. To me, it doesn't resemble picasso, but it does remind me of some nice morrisonite. I love the colors and pattern. Anyway, I was thinking that the name could just be some local thing and that it actually has a more common name.

Yeah, I love this stuff too. It's very hard, takes a nice shine and smells like crude oil when you cut it. Ira from the Searcher's club is the guy who collects this (he's still collecting it but it's a top secret location or at least he wouldn't tell me anyway!). Ira's super nice, you could contact him through the club and he might be able to tell you more about its composition. I believe it comes from the Laguna area.

Just cabbed a piece. Hated to cut it, but had to see it cabbed.

I will try to get over to the workshop and take some pics this weekend. My buddy and I collect this locally near the Laguna coastal area. Most of the area is inaccessible (developed or protected) but we have found an area that is open. Its a fairly tough urban hike through drainage ditches and stuff like that. I would agree with Mel that its chert like but i believe some of the cracks have been resealed with chalcedony.

I think it is probably a chert, too and it does have something else filling some seams. Polishes really nice. It didn't seem as hard as a hard jasper and not soft like picasso.

I have a piece i've been wanting to polish. Now im inspired to work on it so maybe this weekend i'll find some time.

I know where it came from, been there. I have a few pounds of it. Teri from my club sells it.
