these were all gathered in northern illinois and michigan at different points over the last several years. i grouped them together to photograph as they seem to bear some resemblance to one another. the patterns are intriguing to me and have definitely made me wonder if they are fossiliferous. the raised criss cross banding on the second rock clockwise and the raised, segmented black 'root/snake' bit on the fourth rock going clockwise are unusual to my eyes. in general, i'm more familiar with invert marine fossils and corals so even if this was some organic matter that was replaced, i have to defer to you veterans of the field. i'm going to try to take better pictures and repost. interesting, I see why you picked them up. Have you tried a scratch test on them to see how hard they are? Magnet? I find similar stuff around here, some of it is basalt based, and the outside gets turned brown with weathering... but other rocks do that too. Can you see any visible "grain" or texture in the rock or is it glassy or crystal-ish? the middle two look sort of like aged/aging serpentine I find here... hard to tell from the photos alone... do the top and bottom ones also have thread like lines embedded in them or seeming to be wrapped around them?

thanks, walt and fossilman, i am working on a solution for rock cutting / slabbing and i plan on squaring that away soon - certainly before we go into deep freeze again here in chiberia. thanks again for the homemade plans, walt. i also think it's about time to invest in some kind of loupe or good quality magnifying glass as that seems to be pretty essential for clarifying petrification.
