Nice weather in central Mississippi today so decided to do early deer scouting, but could not get to the area due to recent rains pushing gravel and mud over the road. Started checking the new deposit for tumbling stones, and amazingly found an agate (my first one) about 10 minutes in. What's so shocking is that this area of MS does not have any agate formation area! The nearest one is Crowley's Ridge Arkansas 250 miles north. Now the question, since this one has fully formed fortifications, is there any special recommendations on how to tumble? Below is a picture of the find. i46.photobucket.com/albums/f148/roundrock2/IMG_1062_zps15bd0ddf.jpgHere's another find I that I cannot identify. It appears to have clear (some milky) areas and areas like a moss agate has. i46.photobucket.com/albums/f148/roundrock2/IMG_1068_zps3c8f8036.jpgAnd some jasper and banded chert I picked up. i46.photobucket.com/albums/f148/roundrock2/IMG_1069_zps5573a4d6.jpgIt still amazes me the interesting stones one can pick up on County roads.

When you say you found an agate, you mean it. Congratulations. The second specimen definitely has some hematite or other iron oxide, but may be a form of quartzite. While not prized by some, it will make a great cab if you go that way. The third photo composite is a bit more perplexing for me, but again I'd suspect some quartzite bands here. Just trying to place your finds in the context of what I find in a radically distinct part of the world. To heck with the deer, go for the rocks. Tom

Those look cool. Sorry I can't give you any advice on how to tumble those (Rookie here) but I would be interested to see after pictures.

Very nice looking agate. congrats! If that were mine and it were my first I would probably face polish it on wheels. It will tumble fine but it depends on if you are wanting a perfectly smooth exterior or just to polish it and leave the natural pits and crevices. I like my agates all smooth but to do that you would lose way to much rock. If you try to tumble it till that pocket in the center is gone your cool banding might get eaten up before the pocket is gone.

congratulations. I found my first after months of searching just a short while ago. That looks like it has some nice pattern going on, and good sized, too! Like you I am new, so no advice as to polishing procedure, just admiration for your finds! Bet you want to get right out there and look for more. : )

I vote wait until you have means to face polish it as a specimen (the first one). The rest can all be tumbled together if you have enough for a load.
