Here are some more of the rocks from the trip that Russ, his wife (can't remember how to spell her name, Cyndi, Cindy, Cindi, Cyndy) and I went on. Some surprised me and some didn't but the mix was about normal for what I have picked up in the past. The lightest. I thought this had some nephrite in it but it weighed in at 2.59 which is less than quartz or agate. I did the test twice with a small piece so now I am going to try it again with a larger piece. The 2.7s which do not make any sense to me because they can not be cut with a file. The 2.8s which are getting close and probably are nephrite with some light stuff in them. Only one in the batch that was in the 2.9s. The over 3.0s with one at 3.26 I have not checked the SG on this one but it is super awesome with a lot of clear in it which I think is probably quartz by the way the edge chipped but the green stuff is way to typical to be anything other than nephrite. 100 percent positive I think. I suppose it could be a green moss agate but the rest of the large stone has a lot less clear translucent areas in it and looks more like the nephrite. Jim

so interesting! Can't wait to see what the s.g. test says. Do any of the "over 3's" have translucent areas in them? getting more and more drawn to "chasing down the green". thanks for posting these!

I am sure that some of the heavier ones have some translucent spots but they are very small (half a pencil eraser or smaller) and there are very few of them.
As a general rule the stones that weigh heavier are darker like the one that is 3.26 is very dark in hand but the yellow feldspar should bring the weight down which it doesn't in that case. Very confusing to say the least. Some that look like they are more than 50 percent feldspar will weigh heavier than some that do not have any feldspar at all. An example would be the 2.74 which is almost all green and the 2.85 which only has green veins in it.
I am quite sure I am not going to live long enough to figure all of this out but I guess I really don't have to as long as I keep finding the good stuff. Want to get back over to that location but the temps are running in the 100s now so it will probably have to wait. Jim

Like the translucent patches Jim. Adds a flair for sure.

it looks like you took a slab off the one marked 2-3.14 did you polish it, and if so, what does that look like? I am going all over the internet trying to find photos of nephrite rough and raw slabs of nephrite... some of it looks pretty grainy-crystal-y the way I would picture finer grained quartzite... when you see it polished it just doesn't have the same appearance. The idea of a rind throws me completely. I am sure there are some jade pieces waiting beneath all the brown crusty rocks on my favorite beaches here if I could only recognize them. Went through my possible jade stack last night. Pictures next, then specific gravity tests to see how far off my judgment (or lack thereof) is. I may have to change my name to jadehunter (not jade finder!). These posts help so much, thanks for putting these on the board.
