you can probably use it for a saw... my saws both run at or under 1 hp

If you google "treadmill motor lathe" it will bring up a bunch of info on what you need to do to run those motors.

Not a good choice. It is very powerful and uses a lot of power. It is also DC. Better to get a simple AC motor.

I am sure that you would have to use the motor speed controller that came with the tread mill. A lot of treadmills use 220 volts ac as input. The controller will convert the AC to DC. Like Mr James said it uses alot power.
