Well ive got a few questions...
First off how do yo get all the oil off the rock after you cut it and it falls into the oil to reuse that oil?
2nd how much of the oil evaporates.. can i leave the hood pen without worrying about evaporation?
Up here mineral oil costs a little over $22 per gallon and my 16 inch rock saw takes 5 gallons to get it to cover 1/2 inch of the blade give or take.
Thanks
Glenn

oil off slabs - bury them in a tub of kitty liter and/or soak in bucket with degreaser and/or wipe slabs with acetone....all of them work. some (like me) use all three methods. might vary depending upon material but that is pretty much my SOP. cheers

when a slab is done I squeegee the excess off and back into the saw then I swish the slab around in a tub of kitty litter on each side till its dry. Next step is into a bucket of hot water and dawn dish soap where it gets scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush.

Will a sponge work good to absorb most of the oil?

Nope it will stick to the rock, have to degrease chemically or kitty litter IMO

I put an old dish rack in a plastic tub. Slabs off the saw get stacked in the slots to drain, then get buried in a pan of kitty litter. Get a little bit of oil recovery that way, and the kitty litter lasts a bit longer. Don't know about evaporation (minimal I would suspect), but I keep my saw closed when not in use to keep the flying bugs from committing suicide. They seem to love the stuff.

I use kitty litter, just leave it buried in it for 10 minutes or so,comes out dry, than I clean the slab in "Dawn" soap with warm water, than fresh water...Presto,a nice clean slab!!!!

I use Oil-Dri . Comes is 25# bag and is much cheaper than kitty litter and works great.

Yep I meant Oil-Dri. I dont know why I always say kitty litter. I get it at the auto parts store for $7 for 40 pounds. I run my saws on a thin oil resitant carpet and actually keep a layer oil-dri around that for the unavoidable oil drips that seem to happen. When I am done sawing I sweep up the oil dri to reuse again. Been slabbing for a couple years and still dont have any oil stains on the floor. Here's the carpet pieces I use. I use them in front of my cabbing stations too for the water mess. www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/OIL2/L90696/N0431.oap?ck=Search_N0431_OIL_-1_3340&mn=Oil-Dri&mc=OIL&pt=N0431&ppt=C1941Chuck

Glen, no need to pay $22.00 for a gallon of mineral oil. If you have a Tractor Supply or similar farm supply store near you, buy the lightest grade of tractor hydraulic oil that they have. It's also mineral oil, and costs about $32.00 for 5 gallons. It has a little bit of odor. You can get a Quart of the cheapest baby oil that Wally World has to kill the odor.
As has already been said, keep the hood down when the saw isn't in use. Bugs and any dust in the air will help to contaminate your oil. I even pulled a dead, oil soaked bird out of my open saw once.

Ok thanks for the replys, I will need to look into the hydraulic oil, no tractor supply here but there is a place that sells them.
