Trial begins on Monday. Also I will be starting the stage 2 rocks in my large tumbler for a few weeks.

Trial starts today using slag... I really don't know what to expect... I have a good mix of material in the barrel... some feldspar, quartz with epidote, jasers and agates, as well as some of the jasper like substance i found.

Your lack of pictures is deafening. A 40 pound tumbler load and no pictures of the material? Heck, we haven't even met (seen) your new 40 pound tumbler yet. Or your new cabbing machine for that matter. How are you going to base your conclusions on the effectiveness of your slag without before and after pictures? How should we?? You ran a load in the 40 pounder already and posted a picture of ONE rock! A " cool jasper like substance out of stage 1". uh .... whoopie ? How are we to see the results of your "trials and errors" with nothing visual to judge your work from. Should we all run out and order 50 pound bags of slag because you say it works? It may be worthless with pictures as well, but at least we would have something with which to form opinions. If your trial here works, fantastic! But, prove it by showing it. Do you ever finish a load of rock?

Do you ever finish a load of rock? I got a few before photos of some rocks going into the slag mix (mostly that jasper like substance along with some agates and jaspers). Everything is rough, no river stuff. I don't think its going to be too affective on harder stuff like agate, but i'm not sure. I keep on forgetting to bring my camera with me to my office where i have the machines. I will know that the slag is / is not effective depending on how it rounds the stones like silicon carbide. As for the 40 lb tumbler i have not went through final polish on anything as i have just ran most my material with stage one and filled up a few boxes... I am estimating that around 4 weeks I will be done with stage 2 grits. As for the stuff I have fully tumbled / polished i will probably only show pics of my favorites

You may be surprised. Regardless of the grit (or lack of) used, there should be some "rounding" (shaping/refinement) of rough stones run in a tumbler. Thing is, I'm not sure just how much of the "rounding" you will be able to attribute to the slag you are using as grit.
Your mad scientist experiments aside, you should know by now that we all love seeing pictures of rocks and equipment! And, as I wrote, it's impossible for us to tell the results of your efforts without before and after pictures. Keep at it!

Yeah I realize that, I once tryed without grit and it hardly rounded the rocks (taking down sharp edges) it made them blunt but not truly rounded.
I realize that everyone likes to see pics but i keep forgetting to take my camera to the location where my stuff is located... I will remember eventually but I usually have more priority things to worry about in morning (homework / work related stuff), often in a hurry.
Forgot to mention soon (when the oil runs off) i will have lots of pics of slabs that i will ether cab or save as just slabs.

Well the slag test is over.. it rounded a little more than no media but for stuff harder then feldspar (including feldspar) I would not (and no longer will) use it as a media. However, the only thing it did round nicely was some scrap howlite. I don't know if the slag or other rocks caused this and i don't have enough howlite to do a test run.
I will take a few pictures of the howlite and other rock soon for comparison but its not worth using for most material.
In conclusion the only media that had a good effect was the tungsten carbide on soft rocks. While it did not grind harder rocks much it did give a "wind blown" shine to them.
I don't know any more medias to experiment with at this point so I will play with the tungsten more I think.
