WOW! That's really beautiful stuff! I wouldn't consider it to be onyx though, as onyx is generally understood to be predominantly calcite, and what you have looks like a really nice crazy lace agate. Kudos on the great find. If you are in the mood to sell some, I'm in the mood to buy.

I see that I jumped the gun when I asked to buy some. However, I am way over here in Tucson, but will be taking off for a week or two to crawl about the west coast looking for various rocks that I have not hounded before. I grew up in Riverside County, Corona to be specific, and I spent a lot of time digging in the desert. I will be hitting the Cady Mountains on my expedition and would be glad to have someone along. If you are up to it, let me know.

looks a lot like what they call "coldwater agate" around here. Agate formed in Devonian limestone... grey and gnarly like that. How hard is it? Very pretty! Great find!

Coldwater agates are found around Alpena? Or somewhere in Michigan? I had never heard of them, but I just looked them up and I like what i see!

Hi -- I used to post here a lot until I ran out of time. Just happened to look in and notice this thread. Your stuff looks a lot like what we call Missouri Lace Agate locally. It's around in a number of locations and the colors vary. However, I have quite a few nodules in the gray/blue/white colors like you are showing. For some reason, I can't find any photos of the rough nodules. I'll have to go out in the yard later today and get a few shots for you. This is what it looks like polished. (I have lots of pictures of it polished!) There's also something called Crowley's Ridge Agate found in southeastern MO down into Arkansas which looks very similar but seems to more often come in the beige and cream colors. The first of these is Crowley's Ridge. I've gotten myself confused with the photo posting, which I'm not used to anymore. These seem to be coming out huge & I don't know whether I'm doing something wrong or what. I'll try to post some photos of the rough later on. Also, hi everybody, it's been a while.

OK, now I found a few photos of this stuff in the rough, but I have a lot more of it and much bigger nodules that I'll have to photograph. It is often vuggy and has druzy -- sometimes very nice crystals. Also sometimes has barite attached to it. It's common in the lead/barite mining area south of here. I'm curious whether you've tried to polish any yet. As you can see, ours polishes beautifully.
