As my name implies, I'm new to this rock tumbler thing. I live in Denver Co and was wondering where i might find my own rough? So far I've been picking up pretty rocks in my driveway, but I'd like some agate, jasper, or anything of the like. Any Natives out there that know where I can find good stones?

Welcome.
Tumbling your own finds can be extra special. Hopefully someone chimes in with an area for you to hunt.

Welcome from Tennessee!
A best first place to start it to join your local rock club. I've always found club members to be very helpful. In fact several years ago when traveling out west I joined the Lake George, Co club and the Southern Utah Club. Both clubs were very welcoming and helpful and was able to dig in several locations that I would not have found on my own or had access to as a result.

Howdy from eastern Oklahoma. I think if I lived where you do I would try some of the creeks east of Denver. Two years ago we spent some time at Colorado Springs and Pueblo. There is a big outdoor rock place out west of Pueblo on highway 50 that sells rocks. They say Canon City is a good place to find agate. Good luck. James

welcome from Michigan. Colorado is known for beautiful rocks. Rock collecting out there is almost a state sport- Good advice from Fantastic5 to contact local rock shops and clubs. Stick with us and show us what you find. I have been doing this less than a year and have learned so much from the helpful friendly folks on this forum. glad you are with us.

Ohio here. Sorry, can't offer any places for you to look other than to second what the others have said. I can offer a welcome to the forum from another newbie. Folks here are extremely generous sharing their experience with everyone, especially newbies.

Try the gem trails of Colorado or other rock hounding books; you just missed the Denver Rock Show and there should have been folks there that know the local spots. There is a Ft. Collins active correspondent on this forum; Herchenx so even if you don't correspond with him via private message, you can search his posts and see the general areas he has collected in and types of stuff he has found. This is not as devious as it sounds. We post here to share info; but we do hope that folks will collect responsibly and not exploit the good sites for excessive profits or status. I'd start out looking for agates, jasper, and petrified wood. Those are popular with collectors, commonly found in general areas, and occur in enough variation that they will cause you to start learning your rocks, spending time in the field and most of all having fun opening and polishing those rascals. Enjoy -- any rocky river bottom has potential. Tom
