I just finished three Rhodochrosite cabs. I hope you enjoy. I am soaking the super-glue dops (nails) off in acetone, I was afraid the heat might damage them. Any one have any experience with this? I had something strange happen. After 3K they had a mirror shine. I took one to 14K on leather & it took a step back??? I took the cab back to 3K & the mirror shine returned. I have never had that happen before. There is some minor undercutting in these unfortunately but it's fairly well hidden by the patterns. Thanks for looking. Rich

Beautiful!!!!! I absolutely LOVE rhodochrosite and I really enjoy cabbing it, too. I have never had the problem you mentioned. I usually take it to 50k just because I love the polish it gets. It looks like water on the surface at 50k. You have some beautiful cabs there.

Wonderful cabs. The material requires a light tough.

Wonderful cabs. The material requires a light tough. I cut them from the slab w/ my band saw, Gryphon, It's great for soft stones, then I shape on a 325 hard diamond lap, then to a soft 325 lap & through the normal progression. That allows me to go slower & have more control over the shape. Rich

beautiful pink and patterns, nice work on reputedly difficult rock. I agree, soft stones are much more challenging for me to get the shape right. Rich

beautiful pink and patterns, nice work on reputedly difficult rock. Hi, Over the years, as the hobby declined here in the UK, I have bought a lot of material from closeout sales. Looking through some of this material the other day, I found a bag of about 1.5lbs of partly tumbled Rhodochrosite. Just about ready for finishing. However, I am reluctant to proceed in case I mess up. The pieces are between 1/2" to 3/4" oval shapes. How would you finish them, Derek

It's very soft so make sure the barrle is at least 3/4 full. I would use plastic pellets to cushon. I only use Tin Ox in my tumblers. I'm not sure that's the best. Many like a very small micron Alum Ox, especially for soft stones. Maybe someone w/ more experience could chime in. You might want to make a new thread in the tumbling section. Rich
