I've only etched copper 2-3 times using this method,,,, linkThe actual etching came out good but my problem was finding the right resist.I ended up using a white Texpen "paint marker",,, I'll show you what I did on a bud vase for a copper rose I made for my wife but DO NOT laugh at my "artistic" ability or,,,how much I was shaking trying to apply that white paint marker,,,,NO laughing,,, It was hard to work with because it's thick and hard to "paint" detail. It did the job but it was difficult. I see in the tutorial that "stop-out varnish" is used.I'm working on a tight budget and don't want to buy something that doesn't work well.Has anyone tried the stop-out varnish or have suggestions on what is a good resist? Thanks,,,, connrock

That is very nice...I've never used that type of etching. Learning something new

Very nice piece. Love the rose. I used to work with copper but I never tried etching. Should be a good thread to follow. Jim

I may have added some confusion by posting a photo of the rose/bud vase. Thanks for the compliments though! I wasn't trying to show my work but rather ask the question: "I see in the tutorial that "stop-out varnish" is used.I'm working on a tight budget and don't want to buy something that doesn't work well.Has anyone tried the stop-out varnish or have suggestions on what is a good resist?"Thanks,,,, connrock

I've used a similar varnish and found it to be too sticky and thick to work with etching for jewelry. I use Sharpie markers and Stazon ink pads. I use duct tape for the backs and sides to prevent etching through a piece.

Thanks Don and nomorehobbies,,,,
I've tried Sharpies but it "washed" off during the process so the etching pens may be the answer,,,never thought of using duct tape either! Thanks again,,, connrock

Hmmm. Haven't had that happen but I'm not etching deep so my stuff isn't in the solution too long. Are you using Ferric Chloride? Are you etching deep or just texture?

n-m-hobbies,,,
No I don't use ferric chloride. I use salt water. I haven't been able to get a deep etch because my resist isn't working well.
I'm trying to avoid spending money on stop-out-varnish and thought that maybe someone found something that worked as well but didn't cost as much. I don't do much etching at all.I "more or less" just play. I guess this is like everything else,,,,trying to cut corners ends up costing more then if you just bight the bullet and spend the money for the right product, etc. Thanks for your interest,,,,, connrock

Ma-Funds-er-low = cuttin corners! LOL
My way of etching,,,,,my CHEAP way of etching,,,,: Wait for the Mrs to go out,,,,go up stairs and raid her cabinets of sea salt or cosher salt or both,,, While there grab a couple suitable Tupperware containers,,,,look WAY in the back of the lower cabinet and take containers she has forgotten she had,,,try to find matching lids from the 200+ lid selection she has collected through the years,,,, Might as well grab a roll of aluminum foil and a few rolls of paper towels while on raiding party! Keep a keen eye open for other interesting items and MOST importantly a keen ear open for her backing down the driveway!
If I could only figure out a way to get her to buy rough grit,8" diamond lap disks, mineral oil, diamond grinding/sanding/polishing wheels, sterling silver plate, copper sheet and maybe some brass sheet I'd be in pretty good shape! But until then I'll always be cuttin corners! LOL

connrock - Have you dumped the brine out of the jar of dill pickles in the fridge yet? Have you tried Coca Cola? Don't know what it does to copper, but it sure will eat away at aluminum! Give me a little time, I'm sure I can come up with some caustic materials found around the house. Cleaning products, hmmmm...

rockpickerforever,,, You got me thinking there but it's really not the etching solution I need it's the "resist" for "painting/drawing" on the parts of the metal you don't want to be etched. I may have a shot at an up stairs raid today and I totally forgot about checking out the "Fem-Chem" department! The Mrs has gallons of "stuff" she paints herself up with and maybe one of them will work as a resist!LOL Maybe some finger polish,,,er mascara er suthin?? connrock

RockIt2Me ,,, Thanks! This resist looks like a winner! Your cuff bracelet is fantastic and on my very best days I couldn't draw anything as intricate and beautiful as your design! What gauge copper are you using? I'm getting so excited now I may even try setting a cab on one of my cuff bracelets now! Thanks again,,,,, connrock

That is quite an elaborate pattern it's fantastic!
Using blue painters tape is also a great way of keeping the back clean. At one time I just painted the backing with resist and it never comes as clean as the blue tape.
The next time I might try cutting a pattern (out) on blue tape and attaching instead of using a marker pen
