So I am getting a Hi-Tech 8" slant cab and was wondering which type of rock would be recommended for practicing. I have some great stuff on the way but I won't be cabbing it at first since I don't want to waste Laguna Agate or Orbicular Ocean Jasper. I don't have access to local rockhounding so anything I practice on will be purchased. I would appreciate any feed back. Thanks John

With a few exceptions, I start out with preforms from lesser scenes so I can learn how a particular material works. If you have a piece of Laguna, cut off something from the edge that is somewhat interesting but not one of the best scenes. If you want general practice, someone here would be willing to put together a small frb for a very reasonable price.

That sounds like good advice. Hard to imagine not having any agates or jaspers laying around to practice on.

My first purchase of rock was a box of saw scrap that I purchased from a member Stones That Rock. It was one of the best purchases I ever made because it gave me an opportunity to try working with many different varieties of material. I am sure that if you posted in the Buy / Sell board there would be a member that would be willing to put a box together for you. Good luck with the new tool Stu

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll ask in the buy/trade board for a box.
