Colored Baculites from Northern Alberta. Pretty little critters. May have to plan a trip next summer. Never seen them ever. Baculites ("walking stick rock") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baculites

Neat!!
I have always wanted to find a really nice firey ammolite. Someday maybe. The stuff is gorgeous.
Here are some beauties:
If you can blow off the hype and sales job on this one, it is a pretty interesting video too

I was in a "rock store" (term used loosely) that had an 18" complete ammolite with about 50% play of color for $69,000!! These pearlescent baculites are sweet!

Mother of pearl on steroids. It has the look of opal. Fossilman's baculites has some mother of pearl iridescence in it. Mark's video is too amazing.

The Baculites look more like a long horn with legs. Ammolite is its relative and looks closer to a snail shell.

Sometimes (rarely) baculites will also form this gemstone. So technically ammolite can be from either ammonites or baculites.

What I do know, is they all lived together in one big happy pond at one time long ago and make some fine looking gemstones. Going to go check out a rock show this morning. I'll take some pics and maybe if things are not to overpriced, bring some stuff home.

I do know from hunting fossils in Montana, that the higher your in the zone(Bearpaw Formation),the better quality of fossils(with mother of pearl)... The lower the zone, which takes you into the "Hell Creek" formations, are still nice, but less colors.. Hell Creek is the zones for dino bone...

Poked around a store that was hosting a rock show and yeh stuff was pricey but there was a few things worth going back for. Not much large rock for slabbing and not enough time to dig in the slab barrel. One case caught my eye and it was because of the white jade. No one in the store could tell me where it was found in Alberta, but its here. Man... does it look like high quality nephrite Herkimer diamonds not far from home seem to be abundant. Never knew. Questioned a couple they call corals, just no one to around with any info that could help me out. I have a couple i found that look just like what they have. Petrified palm.

Lacombe has a rock shop! Cool going to have to stop when I pickup my Len Thompson fish hooks. Had some made with my company logo on them. White jade in Alberta is a nice surprise. My guess would be the Red Deer River valley. Makes me curious about a peace I found while collecting Pet wood a few weeks back. Going to have to dig it out of the boat. The Handhills are close to me about a hour and a half drive. I have been there only to be disappointed with posted land. Farmer wasn't home so I headed to Drumheller. Thanks for posting.

I take it your from around Stettler or Lethbridge Bushman? Not to far at all from me. Nice to know , may have to meet up and go rockhounding-fishin with you some day. Lived all over AB following the oil patch booms in my younger years, now in a laid back job waiting for the last few years to full retirement, commuting 200 km a day to work and home. Just cant live in a major populated metro, the pace of life moves to fast for this slower laid back lifestyle i enjoy in a small town. Leduc also has a shop that opened a year ago and there is one in Bentley or Rimbey , he also owns the ammolite ranch and has some friggen awesome BBq's parties. Red Deer river valley before the dam or after you figure? I was thinkn maybe around Peace river area. Nothing online so far that I could come up with looking for any chance of some sort of a location. It would be sweet to get a truckload of that jade. Keep me posted on the chunk in the boat. Company logo fish hooks on red devils or 5 of diamonds, sounds cool. Handhills isnt bad if you can get permission for land access. Silvercove has a couple digs each year where they have permission to access the land. i'll keep you posted on the spring one, LoL long ways to go yet. Pleased to meet you ,and thanks for checking out the post.

The Toleman Bridge area has good hounding and fossil collecting with easy access. I try to go at least once a year. I mainly hunt north of the Hat at sandy point bridge. The places I go there are mostly untouched and are accessed only by jet boat. If your ever in the area, give me a shout and I will give you a tour of the river. There is another good spot just west of Hilda. can drive into this one and permission is just a phone call. This the piece I found at sandy point. First time I have seen anything like it.

Hi Guys Thought I’d add this plate of Orthoceras. Sometimes they get confused with the Bacu’s The detail in this plate is excellent. The photo not so much. Taking picture at noon is bad for rocks Ed

Interesting Mike I wasn't sure where this Orthoceras was from.
How can you tell? From the surrounding matrix?
I just looked them up and many fossils of this type are from Morocco. According to Wiki though Orthoceras fossil are all over the world.
Thanks Ed
