Went on a family trip to Red Mountain where the iron runs deep and the mountain got its name from. There's hematite naturally found there and here are some pics of our finds. This pic was not altered in anyway. The dirt has a fascinating color to it that I've not seen anywhere else This staining is just from picking up rocks. No digging of any kind. The signs said this was an old bathhouse (maybe there was one on top). What was beneath this was amazing Same stuff you'd see in a cave. I thought it may be man-made until I went underneath and got a closer look And this is what is was collecting into on the ground: Found a piece that seems to have been removed from the surface Maybe an old well with a tree growing out of it Was a great place to visit. Will def be going back. Tons of hematite, slag glass (near the entrance), and some green stuff we know not what it was/is.

Thanks for the fun pictures. I always thought stalactites took a lot longer to form. What state is that in?

Thanks for the fun pictures. I always thought stalactites took a lot longer to form. What state is that in? It's been abandoned since the 1960's, but was built in 1895 so they've had a little time to grow. They also have a dog park, zip line, ropes course, and multiple hiking trails. Near some of the mine entrances had some of the most awesome looking hematite specimens I've seen. This was in Birmingham, AL. Pictures don't do this place justice.

I went to a place in Michigan many years ago I think was called Iron Mountain. Interesting mine tour. The river near there runs red from the iron oxide.
