Beautiful coral macro shots, jamesp! This one is outstanding!! The dreaded botryoidal famine Jan. The botryoidalists of the world need to collect at that place. --botryoidalism-- it took 2 years to learn how to spell that word.

Great pics! In this one particularly, what is the mineral that gives it to show the red pigmentation spots.

ROFL too. Vomit eh... And orrum checks to 'or rum'. And I mentioned orrum once and it said 'or rum' in a sentence and could not figure out why rum got in the sentence, and it fit.

Great pics! In this one particularly, what is the mineral that gives it to show the red pigmentation spots. Most likely iron spirit. The coral has tiny capillaries that did not silicify, tiny passages throughout. So that 'spice' sprinkling gets in the tiny passages, of various colors. Cheyenne and black pepper They run throughout most of the coral, even if the chunk weighs 500 pounds. Same thing: After 1000 grit in tumbler- the corallite 'fingerprint': Cheyenne: Found this 30 pounder. Had spice in it. Chip is cooked. Spice bluish/black before, cheyenne after

Orrum, the town in Nc. is so named for a store that closed during prohibition and had a sign that said....
Beer Or Rum For Sale
The boards with Beer and For Sale fell off so that crossroads came to be refered to as Orrum!!! It is now a town, population 65 hardy souls!

At least in the south. I knew it had to do w/rum. No telling what the story is gonna be behind the name of these towns. Sometimes scared to ask

I can find the same pigmentation spots in agates from here. To me, they seem to be the only 2 places I have seen this in so far, especially the iron-red ones. Peppered black is hot looking too! In blue agate the spots can be red or white.

In blue agate the spots can be red or white. i would guess your agates are fills and the coral is a replacement. The fill goes in a open pocket and a replacement enters a structure like wood or coral. No telling what happen when agate is formed in a fill, it is like a free form art creation, nature's Picasso. Partial fills in coral too, where open pockets exist. but they are on the bland side, rarely plumes, mosses, bands. Coral formed at cool temps, I think many fills are effected by higher temps.

how did I miss this thread for so long? Beautiful, just so beautiful! Still have not collected coral in about 5 other locations. Mostly further from home in middle Florida. Pink and blue is a common color in that area. Exploring that area requires more serious road trips. Over population has narrowed down collection locations in that area too.

can't wait to see the results of that! Pink and blue! I took the swamp boat about 2 miles out in the gulf to some rock keys and found a few corals. I would have to snorkel to get them Deb. Found a couple of arrowheads on those islands. The coral was all picked clean on the islands, so snorkeling would be the way. Terrible place to snorkel , some pretty water, many islands pepper the area, most covered with silicified fossils.
