Not going to heat treat these. The heated ones were fast to rough shape and seem slow to polish. Should not have heated. phil thank you much for this beautiful rhyolite. Andy's Montana rhyolite different in color, both are fine. All this rhyolite was a fun to make tumbles out of, used 4 ounce hammer. Will use broken up SiC 60 grit grinding wheels again for coarse grind. Once roughly rounded a week or two will put them to the grinder to get rid of pocks, convex spots and skin. 25 pounds to start tumbling Closer Leftover cores, plenty left. again, thanks Phil.

Beware the tan color.... it tend to develop soft spots. I think it is about a million years short of development. But the ones that don't get spotty make some very pretty cabs, tumbles, etc... Glad you like it! I still have a couple hundred pounds to get rid of...
ENjoy, and show us the pics when done!

That stuff takes a trained eye. you think it is going to be chalky till you knock the coarse skin off. Then you find nice glassy material inside. Filled 10 and 15 pound barrels and set them tumbling. Lots of sharp edges due to the way it broke. Should reduce in volume a lot. i would think collecting it in the field takes some know how. The lighter tan colors do seem a bit chalky, the yellow was like glass.

Can't wait to see how it turns out. I also got a box from Phil, but I'll have to wait til after the holidays to start working with it. Lot's of cab patterns, are you tumbling it ? I'll be doing both. Today I put a small fist sized piece into the tumbler just to see how it turns out. I really want to cab it, lots of great patterns. I'm sure there will be lots of tumble size pieces once I start cutting.

The folly of the rhyolite heat treatment. bsky4463, I apologize, I about ruined your rhyolite for a polish by heat treating it. It made it very soft. I had to remove it from coarse tumble in a few days it was rounding so fast. That is all good, but it will be difficult to polish. Perfectly hard polishable rhyolite to start with. I have the other rhyolite in the coarse tumbler and it is not heated. It will take a heck of a lot more than 4 days to rough grind. Different animal. The coral does the same thing, heating makes it softer and therefore tumble faster. But even heated it is about Mohs 7, plenty hard to take a quick polish. Will do move your rhyolite to 14,000 and then whip out the 50,000, all in the vibe. Will get at least a matte polish. Which is fine, it is beautiful. Did a scratch test, obsidian plowed a deep scratch in the heated rhyolite, would not touch your unheated stuff.

No worries, all in the name of keeping you occupied ---an idle jamesp is not a good thing. I will hound up some new stuff for you in the spring. Cheers

No worries, all in the name of keeping you occupied ---an idle jamesp is not a good thing. Must disagree. An idle jamesp is innovative, entertaining and often amusing. I've got my fingers crossed for a trebuchet build - which he may not have thought of yet.

And since I softened the rhyolite, must have more, oh yes The rhyolite was perfect for knapping after being cooked. just a bit soft for a good tumble polish. They are fine tumbles because they broke up into cool shapes for the tumbler. Fun splitting that stuff with or across the bands. It is one rock that can be broken with a hammer and have hardly any fractures.

Now for the latitude and longitude..... You mentioned you are going back to work...to be captbob ?? I mentioned going back to work?? Maybe my wife was posting under my ID??? No more captbob, that's a younger man's gig for multiple reasons. I may find something else should I get bored, but my To Do List is still pretty full - preventing the possibility of boredom in my near future.
