Most of those mandrels are pretty cheaply made. If you're going to try something like that, I'd go with the mandrel from a John Deere 110 or 120 series lawn tractor. I've owned both tractors, and the mandrels are really well made. Don't know how they'd work for a horizontal machine, but they'd be great for a large flat lap.
John Deere mandrels aren't going to be cheap. You might find a mandrel from Covington will cost less.

I have 2 new decks from cub cadets and the houseing on the mandrels seems pretty decent , I have tore them apart yet but i was thinking i could pehaps make a 4 spindle frame and run different buffing pads on them

Check your spindles and see if they have 2 sets of bearings in them. Also, the bottom of the spindle as it sits will have a thrust bearing. This should be the side that will get the pulley in what you want to build. The end wich now has a pulley on it is the side you'll want to mount your buffing pads on.

Too funny. I don't think I want to mount a polishing head on that. Mower deck bearings however... They do take a lot of abuse, and if it's something you already have it's worth a shot.

If they take the abuse of out of balance blades and hitting rocks ect , i would think they have to be pretty tough

I love mandrill baboons! Saw first one in Fresno in the 1960s. Didn't look real. All the color, plastic, feathers. Thought it was a joke.

Thanks Mark K and Pat. I feel like a dominant baboon today, so I changed my avatar with your inspiration.
