Hi, New to the boards, been collecting 'pretty rocks' all my my life. Have a nice collection of agates from the Oregon coast, some sapphires and quartz (?) from MT, other rocks from other various places, so it's time I make them pretty and recently received a small tumbler as a gift (not planning on tumbling the sapphires). Been poking around on the boards for tips and tricks, so wanted to finally say 'hi'.

Rockoonz it's not that bad ...hope to attend a local club meeting soon. Need some pointers on where to go, still very new at this. Hello! iant fossilman, will be heading to the Oregon coast at the end of the month, got any tips on where to go? I know where to find agates, would like to find other stuff, not picky, just as long as it shines up nice. thanks!

As for agates, yes they are everywhere on the beaches...Between Lincoln City and Newport are some beaches that have fossils, some great finds there..Thumbs up.. Can collect off the beaches and next to the walls, but no digging on the walls!! Try Forgerty Beach,Moolock Beach,Beverly Beach, plus Lost Creek Beach.....I have always had good luck finding fossils there.. PS: Sea glass is a great collector too,so many colors out there to find..If not really into that, pick it up anyhow, makes great trading material, because there are a lot of glass collectors out there...

Thank-you for the suggestions fossilman! I will be checking those places out! Do like sea glass as well, hope to check out the glass beach here in the spring (when I was a kid, I found a fist sized piece of it at the beach, nicely rounded too-kept it for a few years and was told it wasn't worth anything, so I tossed it-still kicking myself to this day)

Ya',just because its not worth it to one guy, doesn't me its not worthless to you...Thumbs up Example- When I was kind of new at the fossil hunts,I was hounding with a friend that was a pro at fossil hunting...I took him to a place that I hunted a lot in the few years I had under my belt. I found a ammonite with the top half missing(completely gone),no where to be found...Well he told me to just leave it be,it was worthless. LOL-he didn't know me that well I guess,I wrapped it in newspaper and took it home. I have two Uncles that taught me everything I knew on fossils and rocks.I asked them about the ammonite, they both said, try to rebuilt it from other broken fossils.. This was my first education on rebuilding fossils from nothing....It took me two years to find and rebuild that ammonite! I showed my Uncles the finished piece, they were amazed at what they seen!!! Since than,I have rebuild over 12 fossils and still going.... I showed the ammonite to my friend the following year,he was floored! LOL... I had it appraised, told the appraiser the whole story on it and he said its worth all of $500.00..That was before that Morocco crap flooded the market and dropped the prices of our good American ammonites and other fossils...(prices are coming back up though).. It is in my private collection,I'll never sell it,to much history with it.... So don't believe a word you hear, when people say it's worthless!!!!!!!

fossilman that is absolutely stunning! I'm impressed that you were able to rebuild it with different pieces, I'm kinda sad I didn't know to look for them before. I've been pretty lucky in finding things once I know what to look for, I will definitely be looking for fossils on my trip!
