Been lookin' to buy one of those Barranca Diamond Highland Precision 14" saws. Tried John @ johnjsgems - 4 to 6 weeks wait time while they (BD) build it. Tried Shawn @ The Rock Shed - he was told it would be 4 to 6 weeks "easy" before it went out. *sigh* looked around & looked around Kingsley North has one in stock! 200 bucks more expensive than John or Shawn. BUT, it ships tomorrow. I'm thinkin' the wife unit is gonna notice. Details on her reaction and the saw to follow ...

I just learned last year that Star Diamond had a left handed engineer. He redesigned their saws with vises on the left side. Some people (that don't have a left handed vise) are pretty critical of it. I don't think it matters at all. I always use both hands to vise a rock anyway. Looking at that picture it is obvious the saw has not only quality but great looks too. You almost need one to use and one just to look at.

Stoopid engineers I have the vise on the right on my HP24 so I'm used to that, but I don't think it will really matter to me. I can drink a beer or shoot a gun with either hand, so meh... One of the main reasons I was attracted to this saw what the vise type. I have never used one, but looking at those vises that clamp down from the top just gives me a bad vibe. They probably work fine, but I didn't want to go there. Looking at that picture it is obvious the saw has not only quality but great looks too. You almost need one to use and one just to look at. I take it you haven't seen pictures of my shop. I'm kinda (what's the word?) meticulous about keeping things "tidy". Keeps me outta trouble! Thank you again John for your answers and efforts regarding my saw quest. You were the first place I tried and I'm sorry it didn't work out. I'll sure keep you in mind for future purchases.

No hard feelings Bob. For the record, I suggested he try Kinsley or Rock Shed when I couldn't get one sooner. Enjoy your new saw.

Congrats on your new saw, captbob! ...I have the vise on the right on my HP24 so I'm used to that, but I don't think it will really matter to me. I can drink a beer or shoot a gun with either hand, so meh... ROFL!

One of the main reasons I was attracted to this saw what the vise type. I have never used one, but looking at those vises that clamp down from the top just gives me a bad vibe. They probably work fine, but I didn't want to go there. Both types have their problems. The bookends style is quite versatile. But; I promise you, if you fail to get a good clamp on your stone, it will pop UP and be free to destroy your blade. In 5 years going to my local club, I am aware of THREE $500 24" 303 blades being destroyed well before their utility. All the same way, all on the same stone type. Obsidian. Maybe glass is slickery'er and clamps less well. Before you pop that beer, clamp the stone in, grab it with both hands and try to set it free. If it stays, close the lid, wipe your hands, start the saw and pop the beer. If it is loose or pops free, lather rinse repeat. And you SHOULD have that beer. Shotgunner's rules.

I would have to beat that pretty thing with a ball bat before I could use it. Something that nice would freak me out. My saw looks like it went through a car crusher and I bought it that way.
Many beautiful women are the same way "high maintenance". Whoa whoa whoa I "did not" say all beautiful women and I am "not" saying it is just women. I know a few pretty men that if I was their woman they would have some new lumps and I would not be their woman. Jim

Shiny! Got her inside the garage with some help from a neighbor I was going to say that this thing is built like a 60s muscle car (solid!), but when you thunk it with a knuckle, the metal sounds thicker. This thing is a tank. Gonna break a major tenet of the Man Code and read the instructions before I go any further. I'm ordering a cart for it and think I will leave it in the garage instead of out in the shed. Figure I'll just wheel it outside the garage to use. Wondering if it will be as loud as my 24" and how the neighbors will react to the noise... That's it for now, gotta get back to digging up my front yard - putting in a sprinkler system and it looks like gophers have moved in. Really BIG gophers.
