I have a feeling it petrified palm or something of that nature, but am not sure... Im sure one of you can help! These two small pieces of wood are my favorites from my recent, first tumble. different side And here are just a couple more pics with this crazy piece of jasper (I guess) added with some Kyanite and a piece of smoky quartz that has been weathered weird... Thanks for your help and hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

In the first pic, the top piece is palm. Bottom is some other type of wood.

So what makes you say LA or TX? Just curious.
Jakes, yeah, the palm piece is the one in question. The other piece I just LOVE so put it in the pic.
It sure would be cool to be able to establish species on these things...

Cool. Just asking cause its from Billings, MT off the Yellowstone River. I also found a big piece of what I thought was coral... will have to take a pic of it, but was just googling palm on the internet and found this... which looks VERY similar to what I found that I thought was coral... me thinks I found a big piece of palm!

Beautiful piece of palm wood (Montana rocks). Those tube like fibers all lined up are a good reason to suspect palm whenever you see them. Coral has a distinct (packed) feel, but its possible to confuse them (I'm sure). Tom

I'll take pics of it when I dig it out of the snow AND when its over about 15 degrees!!!
I did find a great piece of coral this summer along with an awesome fossil plate that had crinoid arms with the fine hair like structures intact... I may have posted them... I"ll have to look! This piece of palm is one of my favorite finds...

Palm is tops. Good on you if you can find it. How big is that 2nd palm ? It would make some wild tumbles. But you may want to keep that one as a specimen or sawed and polished. That dark molasses color in your wood is agate fill, the lighter beige areas are more replacements, showing the original grain. Here is an example, see the dark ring, it is fill. As is the white agate that filled the cracks, the beige part it replaced by agate leaving the grain. palms have a stipe, bulb and dense roots that look like thick hair coming out of a head(the bulb) you may find any of those parts petrified.

Yup, petrified palm fiber,no doubt. Looks pretty much the same no matter where it's from with some color variation from different regions. Those earth tones occur most everywhere palm fiver occurs though. I've seen virtually identical stuff from California, Texas and Louisiana too.....Mel

As far as I know, its the only piece I've picked up here in Montana... BUT... I have a lot of wood that isn't very descript on the outside, so maybe I have more?
My next rough tumble will probably start in less than a month and I think it will be about 10# of all wood... cant wait. hehehehe

Are you saying that you are keeping the crap from the Yellowstone to cut?
I discovered that I do not like that stuff a whole lot. As soon as it hits the final stage, it fractures to pieces.

I meant the wood. I have had some stuff that looked great up until it fractured all to pieces at the end. Now I only keep the extraordinary stuff and the clear stuff. The rest gets tossed in so I don't find it again and again, and again.......

I pick up the non agatized stuff and will throw it in a pile by the house... still love it! Some of it seems to take a decent polish, but obviously the agatized is much better!
Are you in MT?

No, I am in MN but I generally take at least one MT/ID trip each year. I know MT rockhounding better than some of the locals.
