Sometimes, whether you need something just doesn't matter. Actually, around here it's not just sometimes, it's usually. But that's beside the point. Craigslist ad posted yesterday for some lapidary stuff. No prices. Called the guy this morning and we dickered a bit over a nonexistent price and came to an agreement over the phone. Drove up there (15 minutes away), gave him some money and left with his lapidary stuff. 2 - 8" Poly arbors w/ old motors (condition of motors remains to be determined. The blue arbor has no wheels, looks good for expanding drums tho. And the grey unit has SiC wheels which seem to have very little use on them. The motors - meh... will give me something to do on a rainy day. Don't need these, so they may become a clean up and refurbish project; which I enjoy doing. 1 - Scott Murray tumbler. It's the size of my 15 lb Thumler's, but this thing has two liners in it. Both ends open to access these half sized liners. Kinda cool I guess in that you can run two loads in one barrel. I had never seen one of these. Came with a 3rd half liner. Unit runs, but will need new lid liners - which I have. I was thinking of parting it out to use to build a 40 lb machine. Will deal with it later. Bottom line: I figure the blue arbor is worth more than I paid for the entire lot. Seller was happy so I drove away smiling.

Love it when a plan comes together. Actually it looks like you SHOULD keep looking at Craigslist ads. I don't see much for sale here,Not that many people here, and of those, not many use craigslist, it is a fairly depressed area economically, and the pickings are slim so I am pretty safe looking. But I still look. You never know....

I really don't know, never looked at these units before, so don't know what a used one would go for. Personally, I wouldn't want anything to do with DRY grinding. Yes, you can have the vacuum sucking up the dust, but how good of a job does that do? There are far too many rocks which would give off toxic dust (maybe ALL rock dust is "toxic" to a point) that I wouldn't want to be anywhere near such a grinding operation. I have enough bad habits, I don't need my rocks trying to kill me as well. Someone - I think it was Jean - rockpickerforever posted a thread with a wet grinder in it that may be able to do the same thing. ETA: Maybe a vibrating lap would work for ya? Not sure exactly what you have in mind.

Dang Bob, I'd of been happy just to find those wide poly hoods. Got 4 - 8" poly's & a 6", and only 1 wide hood in the bunch.

The wife tells me to stop but that hasn't sunk in yet. Called about a 24" saw I don't need and ended up talking with a local guy that's into rocks. Never met or knew anyone in the area before since we don't have any clubs this far south of Chicago. We made it a point to meet up when it gets warmer. That was a good CL score I think and it hasn't cost too much yet !

Nice finds captbob! I check craigslist almost every day too. I've had a few steals over the years, but you seem to be in the land of used lapidary. I wonder if it is the retirees thinking they would like the hobby, but changing their minds? Found a new vibe for jamespatlanta.craigslist.org/nat/for/4864151391.html

Ya mean this one -
It's made by Barranca (think saw blades), we picked it up in Quartzsite at the PowWow at least five years ago. We were just talking about it today, trying to remember what we paid. I wanna say something like $350? Could be wrong... Might have the receipt around here somewhere. I prolly should find out.
Forgot to add - Personally, both Bob and I have to stay away from CL, hazardous to the pocketbook, lol. Too much good stuff.

We have one of those dry grinders, personally don't care much for it as being good for rocks. Hard to see exactly what you are doing, rocks heat up very fast, and the dust aspect. Works pretty good outside in good weather for some of the wood projects I do.

So what is that one worth? Do you have to hold the rock by hand and keep moving it around?? Or how does it work?

Looks like some vintage lapidary equipment captbob. The old stuff is built better than the new. Cast metal arbors are a disappearing commodity. Rugged stuff. It is OK to dry grind with a respirator. Most are rated for arsenic and asbestos dust. I use fans to remove the dust so I can see.

Broseph, that is a Richardson Ranch high speed sander: $395 new. I never used one so I don't know how well it would work.

There were a couple of other companies that made wide hood to fit the Poly arbors. I have one from Rocks of Texas.
